I would like to use my Carden CAP in IMAC next year. However, I need to quiet it down a bit. I know that it can be a tight squeeze due to the wing tube getting in the way in this plane.
Has anyone installed cans in a Carden CAP? If so, do you have any pics of the installation? |

Yes, I have, there is a thread on my set up here somewhere. Let me try and find it. What you need is MTW 110 K's, with 90mm drop headers. You will need to cut an inch off of the headers to get clearance for the wing tube. If you like my set up I can scan the drawings of my mounts, and e-mail them to you if you like.
I will look up the thread, and post the link when I find it. Shouldn't be long. Here's the link http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/s...ister+mounting It wasn't my thread, I was just posting pics showing how I mounted my cans to answer another guys question. Mike Darr |

Temptation-
Fantastic! Just what I am looking for! If you could scan those drawings and e-mail them to me that would be great! I will PM you with my e-mail. Where did you get the canisters and the headers? Are the headers MTW as well? Thanks! |

I got the whole set up from DA. Huffy, really did a lot of research on finding the right set up for the Cap. He was dead on.
I believe the headers are MTW's as well. Call Huffy at DA and tell him to sell you what he sold me. It's all on record. I think the cans, headers, teflon, and clamps was $425.00 if i'm not mistaken. I will bring my templates to work tomorrow and scan them. You should have them by this time tomorrow. I will send you some more pics tonight also if you like. Keep in mind that you will need to trim 1" from the headers, but I did not notice any performance issues. Transition is fine. I run those cans with a Mejzlik 30x12 and it's pretty quiet. Next season I am going to try a 3 blade 28.5x12, that should be even quieter. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. Mike Darr |

I'll post them to this thread if you don't mind. That way it can help others if they are interested also.
Please post pics of yours when you are done. I would like to see them. Oh yeah, whatever you do...DO NOT run a carbon fiber wing tube after you install cans. The cans will heat up the resin in the tube, and it will fail. I have a friend that had this happen to his Carden Cap. He pulled up after a long downline, and the wings folded. He flew it around and almost landed it, but it stalled and crashed. Mike Darr |

There is still 3 or 4 weeks of flying left here in NY (for me anyway). I will begin the canister installation as soon as the CAP goes into hibernation!
Thanks! |

Here are some additional pics of my can installation in my 40% Carden Cap 232. With the advice of Brian Huffmeir from DA, I decided to install two can mounts in the plane. Brian stated that with just one, you run the risk of breaking a header. It made sense, so I did it. I only have 12 flights on the plane since the cans have been installed, so this mounting system really hasn't been tested yet. I really don't think I will have any problems. I know a lot of guys have decided to install just one can mount, and I have not heard of anyone having any problems that way either. It is up to the builder really. I really like the silicone tubing mounts like this. For one, removing and installing the cans is very easy. All you need to do is remove the header bolts from the engine, then slide the header and can assembly out. It is important to have adequate cooling vents in the bottom of the plane to get rid of the heat produced by the cans. I do not know for sure if it is necessary to enclose the cans like I did or not. I wanted to protect my radio gear from the heat, so I built the box. You want to make sure you make the hole in F1 big enough around the cans to get some airflow through there to cool the cans down. I cut the opening around the cans 1/4" larger than the cans. I am sure the cooling holes I cut in the bottom of my plane are overkill, but I thought it looked good. I cut away the original balsa flooring and bracing and replaced it with some aircraft grade 5 ply. I choose to do this, just in case the plane is picked up from this spot, it can handle the weight. The balsa stringers that were originally in this area have been removed. They are no longer needed because that area of the floor is ply now, and the rear can mount serves as a brace also. I remommend drilling holes in the can mounts for two reasons. One is to allow air flow through the can box, and two, for lightening. The access panel in the top of the can box is not necessary, but is nice just in case you ever need to get in there. One example that you would need to get in there is to change the silicone tubing for the mounts. I enclosed the wing tube socket in the can box for looks only, and this will not cause any damage at all. It is important to make sure you don't run a carbon fiber wing tube when cans are this close to the tube. The exhaust heat can cause a carbon tube to fail. I built my can box out of 1/8" and 1/16" aircraft 5 ply. This setup is pretty easy to convert, and I am very glad I decided to do so. I will be glassing the holes in the cowl where the stock mufflers originally exited. I will also be glassing the big square opening in the bottom of the cowl and cutting angled slots for cosmetic reasons. That big of an opening is not necessary, and the slots, when finished will provide more than enough air flow. See pics below of installation. The first two pictures are what it looked like when I started. I will be recovering and painting this plane over the winter. When it is done it will look like it was built with cans from day one. I can't wait to see the final product. Bob, I hope this helps you with your can installation. I look forward to seeing what your final product turns out like. Most likely you will build off of my idea, and will end up with a better product. Thats usually how that stuff works out. Enjoy your project. After the last picture is a pdf file of the template I made for the canister mounts I used in my plane. If you print out the pdf file you can transfer it to a piece of 1/8" aircraft 5 or 7 ply and have at it. Mike Darr
