Default 3W Yak

Hello Guys,
I presently fly Carden 40% planes and have been throwing the idea around about getting into a 3W 37% Yak. Something different. I have never had a composite plane. I am looking for any input on the 3W Yak. How does it fly compared to other planes. Finished weights and how the planes are setup. whether to go with a level 1 or the competition version. I have seen some videos, but just looking for personnal experiences. Good or bad.

Thanks.

I know Andrew Jesky had two, and had nothing but good things to say about them. His first one I believe weighed in at 37 lbs. with cans. If you are looking for a turn key one, Andrew is selling his second one. It is listed in the model airplane sales section on the Giants.

I am sure Andrew will see this and would answer any questions you may have on the airplane. The one he is selling is beautiful and if I was in the market for a new plane I would buy it in a second.

Mike,

I have talked to Andrew and he does have high praise for the plane. I am still interested in what others think. I have also talked to Jason Noll about his. The one thing I notice and I didn't ask Andrew, is why is he selling ? I am also curious as to how they hold up over time. Just not sure that I want to go with a composite, but I am thinking of trying.

Tank,
I sure would appreciate that very much.

Remember these 3W planes are not all composite, (which is a good thing,) It's only the fuse that is composite. And if you go with the level one version there is a lot of work that you would have to do yourself.
Most people think that the 3W planes are ARF's but in reality they are kits and there are things that need to be done even in the level 3 version.....but it is one sweet flying machine.
I don't own the Yak model but I do own the 40% 330 one and I really like it a lot.
I have seen Garrett's yak and man up close it's really sweet, and handles great.

Pale Rider,

How is it going ?
It has crossed my mind to maybe let a 330 go, but just not sure. I would keep the Yak and I have a couple 260 in progress. Just looking to maybe try something new, but just not sure.

Tailchaser,

Yes, I am aware of the kit make up. I was maybe hoping to try one. I had a chance to fly a friends 3W Extra this summer and was surprised how natural the plane felt right off the start. Very solid. I was hoping that with the price they are asking for a level 3 that most work would be done. Which version Extra did you get and what kind of weight did you end up at for the Extra ?

Andrew is selling his because he just simply has to many planes right now, and he really like his 260's.

There are a few little things I have found on the 3W airplanes that i was not too crazy about. they are really nice overall but here are a couple of tidbits thay may help should you get one.

The canopies are held in place with well over 100 screws. This I assume is done because the canopy material is VERY brittle. I recently had one of the Yaks in the shop for canopy replacement and let me tell you it was a chore. Do not try to cut the canopy with scissors, it must be cut with a Dremel and cut-off wheel and then sanded to final shape.

The Nomex honeycomb that they use in the fuse construction will start to show through the paint if it gets too hot. there are also lighening holes cut into all the control surfaces that tend to puff out when it gets hot so I advise that small breather holes be made. we did this by heating up a small peice of wire and pushing it through the leading edge and into the cutout on each surface.

On the Votec that I built I found that the Nomex would crush when the cowl was bolted on so if I were to do it again I would remove the nomex on the inside where the screws go through and add a 1.5" square of CF cloth. on the Votec we glued the canopy on the frame and smoothed out the seam with some light glass cloth to avoid the screws.

The rudder pull-pull is different. With the stock rudder horns the linkage sits over an inch behind the hing line. This means that the driver bellcrank under the canopy ended up having about a 1 1/4" offset.

The airplanes themselves are very well built these are just a couple of items I found while working on a few of them.

Hello,
The 3W Yak is incredible! Quique has been flying them for years now. Chris Maier, Andrew Jesky, Jason Noll, and a few others are flying them currently.
They are of great quality, and are available in some really cool "Airbrush" schemes if you are looking to that route ( Level Three ).......
