Default IMAC PLANE SUGGESTION

Hello!

Who was the dominant plane manufactuer in IMAC this year? Also was the 35% or 40% scale dominant? May be a loaded question(s) but I am gearing up for the 07 season and have considered buying the Comp ARF 3m Extra260 but I am doing homework at this stage. Has anyone flew the new 2.6m Comp ARF 300sx in competition?

Thanks,

Perry

Tons of good airplanes out there for IMAC. You will see a tons of diff manufactures out there and alot of planes in the 35 to 40% Class. You will tend to see mostly 40% birds in the upper classes depending on the region, but you can definetly be competitive with a 35% Airplane. I dont think you can go wrong with the 260 or the 300.

PTS,

In the southwest region, the majority of the pilots fly 40%ers. There is no need however to do this unless you just want to. Any 35% plane is sufficient all the way through unlimited. At your altitude, the most important thing you can do is keep it light. Any 35% with a 100cc motor and weighs less than 26 lbs should be perfect. Some good choices are the new Dalton 260 the Carden 330 or 260. If you want an ARF check out the QQ 102" Yak. These are just my opinion of what I have seen fly well in IMAC.

The Comp ARF 2.6M Extras are a little on the fast side, this comes from their aerodynamically clean design.

I have been flying the 3M 260 for a while now and have built 2 others as well. IMO the 260 is as good as it gets. If you choose to get one drop me a line and I will give you some tips that will save you some time in the construction and tuning.

How do you guys think the Matt Chapman Cap would do in IMAC,, I have a BME 110xtreme I just purchased,, I am trying to keep the cost reasonable,, I was looking at the 33%-35% Aviation models on Chief Aircraft they are cheap now,,, but I was leaning for the Matt Chapman cap 33%,, because of the cheap replacement parts,,, I know that is probrably queer but it is important to me, I 3d alot and have been known to dork one up, I will be flying Alot of IMAC in 2007 along with the regular weekend 3ding,, what do you guys think

IMHO...

Best planes...
40% Dalton 260
38% Columbo Extra

I have not flown either... but they sure look Bad Ass in the hands of the right pilots....

Prob'ly the IMAC Judges oughta pipe in on this one!!!

I think you would probably like one of the aviation models better, the way my cap flies percision is ok, but thats all it is is ok. But for 3D it's a machine. Im looking at the aviation models 35% yak right now, because I just don't feel satisfied with the freestyle performance of my cap, but thats just me.

My only tip for the 260 is to get the CG as far forward as you can. I moved mine from 110 mm at the wing tip to 95mm and it made the airplane lock in much better to lines and some of the mixing went away.

Hey Shawn!

Thanks for offering some assistance. I e-mailed Wingo and told him I wanted the Red/Black Kiwi Scheme. Shawn I have bought some items from you in the past and will be calling you soon.

One other question: Whats the latest in 40% power? I have had DA before but with my altitude I am looking for a little more. Will the 3W-157 fit in the cowl without major surgery? I am also hearing a few good things about ZDZ. Please chime in!

What about Kroma? I saw a video of Todd Blose flying a 40% with the 180 and it seems like this thing is a bear.

Thanks,

Perry

I 100% agree with Andrew on the CG issue. On the 2 that I have built I made up trays that hold the fuel tank, RX batteries, ignition module, ignition battery and reg. This tray pluggs into a couple of pins that are sticking out the backside of the firewall and is hend with two screws just in front of the wing tube. The front of the Rudder tray is mounted to the back of the gear plate. Throttle servo is attached to the gear plate as well. I use an SWB 3 degree engine mount and shim an additional 1/4". The tailwheel is my own XL titanium and the engine baffle is also my own design with upper and lower baffles.

The 157 will fit width wise but the carb will stick out the bottom of the cowl some.

When you hit the sweetspot of the CG most of the mixing will not be required but do mix up elevator when rudder is applied. nothing drastic, start at 3-4% and 1-2% opposite aileron with rudder.

set the differential to 3% negitive to start with.

If it tucks to the belly on knife edge with about 20 degrees rudder and the mix setting stated above you should run the CG forward more. The nose is pretty short on this airplane so you may have to get creative on getting weight out of the tail. I have CF hinge tubes and every bit of hardware is aluminum. For every 1/4 Oz out of the tail you will save 1 full OZ off the nose.

I am running a DA 150 that is sala Modified on mufflers and a 3W 28X12 3 blade. this combo pulls really hard at sea level. When I went to the SW regionals in Vegas I thought I may have to break out the Mej 32X10 but vertical was not an issue with my setup. I have no hands on experience with anything but DA in this size range so I can only offer you DA.

Shawn
