Garrett,

I apologize; my comment was made in rather poor taste. I love Caps (I have 3) and tend to get a little defensive. The (usually) minor coupling can always be mixed out. I’m just glad you didn’t say they’re snappy.

I am back from 3 flights on the maiden the Hanger 9 33% Cap. I used a GP CG machine and I am at 7” on the inboard root of the wings. I did use the outer wing tip method to balance. At this CG I require just a hint to fly level inverted. My trim set on the radio has been set up 1 on all things except throttle. The maiden required 10 clicks of down on the elevator and nothing on the ailerons. I am requiring more right thrust. I did not have the correct gear to take care of this at the field. I will also require a mix for down lines as they pull out slightly. I did take care of a rudder to elevator mix of -3 on both left to right and right to left. I expected more like a -5 to a -7 for the way the Cap stab sits. I have also read were Caps owners are requiring a mix as the plane would roll very badly in knife edge. I am not sure if the newer Cap has some redesign issues; however, mine is flying more like an Yak in the fact its flying very true or close to it knife edge. I also am only running one 5955 on the inboard hole on both wings and full throttle present no issues with this set-up. I am also running one 5955 on the rudder and this also is working great with easy recovering in knife edge. I have never flown a Cap that was not strong on its side to me that is an Edge flaw. I have had 3 Caps, Sig, GP, this is my 4th Cap and it’s hard to believe this baby flies so great. The DA-85 has the power to move this thing like there is not tomorrow with less than a gallon on the motor. I am getting 6550 on a 26A Vess upon landing so that is my hot RPM. If you do go full throttle the plane quickly become a spec in the sky. I did not do any blender, walls, harriers, elevators and T-Rolls. I have to get the things I want flying to my style 1st then I explore that side of the house. I will not be moving my CG as I like it a lot at this spot. I will do the following:

Add a throttle to elevator mix for the last click of throttle.
Add more Right thrust
Correct the cowl to spinner alignment once the R-Thrust is to my liking

This Cap can jump right in there and fly IMAC if you ask me. I am very pleased to have another bird in my Hanger that I will enjoy fling. That’s more of the goal this year is to only have those birds in the hanger that you would/want to fly. This is my first experience with a DA motor of my own and it’s doing well for me on the 1st gallon. The Cap is only 21.5 lbs so weight is really not an issue with this set up. Weight was saved by only using one servo per wing, adding carbon fiber for the spinner, wing tube and landing gear. There was not any snappy behavior out of this Cap or any of the other Caps I have owned. I fly with 10 degrees on all of my bird’s low rates and 20-25 on my ailerons and rudder low rates. I usually use 35-45 on the ailerons, elevator, and rudder 3d rates. I am running a throttle curve on this bird along with having number of 130 and 124 on my throttle travel. I only have three landing on the Cap and its landing very very slow; however, I am coming in so slow that I am making corrections until my wheel touch down. It’s not the bouchee landing just so slow and figuring out the few clicks deal needed to let it settling on in for a landing is what I am learning on this bird right. Well anyway the maiden went well not it time for the weather to cool off and let me spend time with the birds (gassers) that I have and just get into a groove with them.

Lightest H9 cap so far.
How is that DA85 running?
Wondering how the one servo per aliron is holding up? And did you reinforce the airons?
I have a friend who's first cap was 24 lbs with a da 100 and his second is 26 lbs with the same motor>

Major3d,

This is the 2nd version of the H-9 Cap that I have. I picked up C/f goodies to do my best to get it down to 23-24 lbs from the reading of the 1st version. Once my kit arrived and I weighted everything I could not believe I would even come in over 23 lbs. I started over est. all things to say 23 lbs. I am thinking my f-1-f ?X are thinner than the 1st batch of Caps. I compared the weights to my fuse of the EF Yak and knew this kit was going to come in super light. I pulled and twisted on the ailerons quite a bit prior to installing one servo and it felt pretty stiff to me. I then felt heck I spent the money on this kit it’s your money to take a chance with so I did. I had 4 used 8411 to try on the Cap. I had 4-5955 on a Bob Godfrey 30% Ultimate. I then removed the 5955 from the ultimate and installed those 8411. I did think hard about moving the servo more toward the center of the cap. I did not move it from the inboard hole. Every kit and I do mean every kit I have ever had always is heavier than everyone else, so I can only assume that if someone actual gets this newer H-9 Cap we'll see my point. The EF Yak did spoil me to get carbon fiber goodies since that kit came with all but a C/F spinner and a super light landing gear. I did buy and install from EF that c/f spinner. Having seen how much of a difference it made on a 88" WS plane made me opt to go c/f on the cap. The cap is so smooth to fly with the linear mix on the throttle. I feel like I have a 50cc plane on a 86.5 cc motor since the EF Yak is a 50cc plane and they both are very close in size. I did take my ailerons and lay them on the EF Yak. The Yak has larger ailerons than the cap and the Yak is designed around one servo, along with that the manual claims to have tested the Cap on 2-8101 of which I have those servos on a Showtime. Today servos are just some beast I suppose as I also see I have 3-8411 on each aileron of my 40% Radiocraft Extra and its quite popular to read about certain 40%-42% birds are loving life with 2-8611, 8711 or 5955 servos. Heck my Radiocraft even had 2-8411 on each elevator half. Weight wise if a person wants to run 2 servos on their ailerons its not going to be a weight plenty by any means. Its all about peace of mine if you ask me. I have not been back out with any planes for about 3 weeks as I have been working on figuring out how can I do this home addition master bedroom/bath idea that I want. If you are in or around Charlotte and you are not high as who knows what and you a masonry or carpentry call me……lol
