The Great American Teach In
Article Written by: Tony "WoodIsGood" Russo

I was first introduced to model aviation by a neighbor that lived a few houses down from me. He invited me to come check out his planes and started showing me what makes them fly and how they work. Although I have taken a couple years off from then and now I was pretty much hooked on model planes.

Each year in November schools all over the country invite parents and guest speakers to come to the schools and share with the students there hobbies and talk about what they do for a living. For the past 4 years I have gone to my kids school to introduce model aviation to hundreds of kids.

Taking some of the big planes in, letting the kids get a up close look at them and showing them how things work has been alot of fun. Today I had classes ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade and all of them seemed to enjoy the presentation and asked lots of questions. I had a couple of teachers and a PE coach ready to go out and buy some electric airplanes to start learning how to fly.

To get involed for next year contact your local school and get signed up. Its alot of fun and a great way to expose model aviation to the youth.

I need to thank Rob Joyner ( Sukhoi29 ) and John Nelon ( X-Rated ) for loaning me some planes and a helicopter to take to the schools this year. Also Max and Toro for the video footage that I used during my presentation.

You should come to my school because everyone still thinks of rc planes as foam things from the wally world.

Good for you for getting in there and doing that Tony.

My wife is a former teacher (6yrs) and is currently a Children's librarian. If any of you are familiar with the Boxxer biplane by OMP, I designed that originally and built the proto with the understanding that I loan it to my wife for an aviation display in the children's section of the library.

I got to do the same thing with my smaller electrics a month and a half ago. It was a lot of fun! I flew a demo too. I loved it when I took off and did one roll to hear screams of WOWs behind me.
