I have been building a 40% edge for some time now and I was planning on getting into the imac season this summer. It is going to be in the red bull scheme and I am just finishing covering. So my main question is will it be a good Imac plane??? I have heard some rumors of edges not being that great in imac because of the straight leading edge??? I did not see any edges at the shootout except the 50% and that kind of concerned me. If I could get some feedback on any ones experience with an edge in competition that would be great. Thanks

I'm probably the wrong person to comment in this thread (OK, I am the wrong person). However, I have somewhat the same dilema - I have a 35% Edge and would like to fly a little IMAC with it...
All the feedback I've gotten about using it has been negative. Mostly centered around the way Edges snap and roll. The way I look at it, at least for the time being, it is what I will have available to fly, so I either have to decide to build something new, or fly through the problems. I imagine in the end, you'll be in the same position. |

The edges are a little " different" when it comes to getting a nice break on a spin, however this does not make them a bad plane. Finish the airplane and go to a few contest, you can always sell the edge and get an extra later.

Here is my take....
is the Edge THE BEST Imac plane? maybe not Will mortals like us really notice the difference? Probably not The Edge stalls a bit differently then others. But if you are starting out, I would assume that you are flying basic or sportsman... the key (and the learning part so you can advance later) in these classes is smooth, straight lines.... (which is harder than it sounds) While the manuevers may not be too complex, they are key learning blocks for moving up... Now... if you are going to the Invitational class at the Shootout, you might not choose the Edge.... But for now, I think it would be just fine But that is just my very humble opinion

If its all you got..........you can learn to fly the plane. Sure, maybe another plane might spin or snap "easier".......but your edge will do it also.
Go out and have fun! Win a few contests.

I would sell it to someone at a comp but I can not ship it. Anyways does anyone have experience with it in imac??? I would be competing in sportsman.

I've been flying Edges for the past couple years in IMAC. 40% Dave Patrick 540T last year in Intermediate and a BBW Carden 40% Edge this year in Intermediate also. Never had a complaint about how the plane flew but had several about how the pilot did. I really love my Carden Edge and I really haven't had any problems with spins or stalls or any of the other items that all the PRO's tell me that are there with the Edge. Maybe I'm just not good enough to be able to tell but I'm having a hell of a lot of fun flying it. I fly about 6 or so contest a year in NC so alot of guys on this site know my Edge and may be able to tell you what I can or cannot do with it but don't hesitate to finish it and fly it and see for yourself. I'm gonna try Advanced this year so maybe it all come out then. My POS $.02 worth.............

I have flown a 40% Carden Edge 540 in IMAC for 3 seasons now. Flys great. In fact, I have beaten several people flying 260's, 330's, etc. I have also gotten my butt kicked by people flying these planes as well. The bottom line is that the real difference is not what kind of plane you fly it is more around how much you fly that plane. I came in 2nd in Sportsman at the Nats the first year with it, but I practiced a lot. I was competitive with it this year because I flew a lot. I was not competitive last year, but did not practice very much.
Snaps are no different from other planes. Rolls can be just as good, you just have to practice and set up the plane right. Spins can be difficult and are the one flaw of the design (if you could call it that). They tend to not have a decent break and just mush into the spin. I have worked on this and have found that to get consistent scores, you have to time the break. First - drag a little rudder into the spin - not enough for a judge to see, but enough to get it to break to the wing you want to drop. Next - and this is timing - hold some elevator going in, but leave a little for right before the break. Right before it breaks, add the rest of the elevator in quickly. If you time it correctly, the nose won't pitch up, but you will get a nice clean break going into the spin. I have heard people tell me that they push down going into the spin and then back on the up elevator. I have tried this and don't think it looks very good. A sharp judge can pick this up pretty easily. Other designs spin a lot easier and look better on entry, but the Edge can look just as good with practice. Keith |

The highpoint of the wing is in a forward V shape, this makes the rudder very effective, like no toe in on a car, sometimes a little too much so the plane feels loose in the yaw for nice tracking, also id back rudder rates off for snaps. The plane can feel a bit pitchy too, usually the cg is hard to get forward due the highpoint average thats so far forward being swept forward with strait leading edge. Lead it up if you need to.

Dhooks are you talking to me about the shipping??? I also have a 50cc extra 260 and a 33%am yak. I think the big edge will prevail though. How does an edge knife edge and what are the roll rated like???

All of the edges I have flown are like pattern planes in knife edge, if the cg is right. no problem there!!! Tracking through point rolls is effortless.

In the lower classes it really doesn't matter what you fly, as long as it flies straight. The lower classes are all about who can draw the best lines and not which plane will do the best negative 3/4 snaps. He who practices the smartest will win IMAC contests.
