Just like the title, I'm new to gas, was given a 40cc motor, and I'm looking for a kit to build around it.
I'm no stranger to RC or scratch building, so I'm not put off by "builders kits" as long as the end result is a good flying airplane if built to spec. My largest powered plane to date is a Seagull Superstar with a Saito 180, it's fun, but not scale and although I could use it for entry level, I would prefer to build a plane that I plane on beating to death, at least I will know it will be the wood failing before the glue joints. Thanks for the help, and if there is any locals that wouldn't mind sharing some info, I'll buy the coffee. John Last edited by JohnFH; 11-16-2006 at 09:10 AM. Reason: typo |

If you are getting a 40cc you should get the crrc pro gf45i. I have one in a 50cc and it pulls hard!

Hmmm.
FPE makes GREAT motors but they can be a bit heavy. Thats a ruff size right there, because your going to wan't a 50cc size bird for the proper wingloading, but it will lack a little of the 50cc power. Perhaps the new H9 80" cap would be a good choice. It has an 80" wing, but still around 1400sq inchs of wing. and people are getting them in at 14.5 lbs with a DA 50, so that would put you in at about 15lbs. that should be a good combo. Also, the airwild extra 260 comes in nice and lite, so that motor could work there as well. And it has an 85" wingspan with a little over 1400 sq inches. Both are ARF's but I think would do your motor justice.

Sleepy is correct in that this is kind of an odd size. (26%)
I found Lanier and Midwest have builder's kits in these sizes that are IMAC legal. If you want a high quality ARF, the Pete Goldsmith Cap from Hangar 9 looks nice.

I found a sale on the Lanier 300S 25% that I couldn't pass up 149 plus free shipping.
The motor might be a little on the heavy side for this plane, but I tend to build light and there are a few threads on this plane with some good ideas at weight reduction. I figure as long as I move things around to get the balance right, it should be ok. My goal will be 12lbs at take off. |

Put every single servo ya can in the tail, batteries behind the wing tube,
and it may be ok. Whats the wing SQ inches?

The Mid-West Extra or Cap would be a good choice. I am building one now for a guy in the club and it is going together really easy.

The plane is 953 sq and the motor all up weight is 3 lbs, only 10 oz more than a Saito 220. The next big thing is going to be in the servo selection and placement in the wing and such.
