Default AM Yak54 30% Engine choice

Ok guys , need some advice planning on putting together my Chief Aircraft Russian Thunder scheme Yak this winter . I am debating on motor choice i really dont want to get into which motor brand is best i am more concerned about cg and what kind of weight i will need up front for proper cg and balance purposes. From what i have read so far a little more than a 50 cc powerplant would be good because these birds are coming out a little heavy. Also i am not running the liter batts i will using Nimh batts probably 2 for receiver and one 1650 or bigger depending on weight issues for the ign. I was thinking maybe the 3w 55 with side carb which weighs around 4 lbs might be the way to go instead of one of the liter weight 50cc class motors.

I dunno if I got a light one or not but my DA pulls this thing awesome. I used 2-2100 NiMh packs, and a 1650 for ignition, 3 switches, choke servo, and no weight saving efforts made. Put both rx packs up in the engine box, ignition and batt also up front and it balenced perfect with no other changes. I'm very happy with this setup but others have had great luck with the Evo/Mvvs 58 too.

If i were doing it again, I go with exactly the same setup.

Ok but what about ign interference with the receiver packs next to the ign and motor ?? I would be using jr 949 or similar receiver thanks for the info also are you using pull pull for rudder or rudder servos or servo in the rear?

I used a pull pull setup for the rudder, and for igntion interference I don't have any, I did have some because of my long leads going back to my rudder wern't up to snuff, so I replaced every extension in the plane to some twisted HD stuff and it worked fine. No glitches what so ever and I'm using a FM Rx. Just set it up, then do a range check with the plane on, if its ok, then do a very thurough check with the engine running. If its ok, you should be fine.

Ok sounds good thanks for the reply , your the second one i have talked to about using batts up front with no issues. I guess i am from the old school on having some distance between the receiver batts and ign and switch area.

I just finished mine up Bruce and it came out at 18 pounds, 2 ounces with a BME on the nose, 4.5 ounces of ballast at the front of the cowl and 3 Fromeco 2400's. I am not satisfied with the power, so I have purchased a ZDZ 60 and will put it on next week. Net weight gain will only be a few ounces and I am hopeful of much better vertical performance.

On my first yak I had everything (except reciever) as far forward as possible to balance with a ZDZ 50. In Yak #2 I put an Evolution 58 on there and everything was right on the wing tube to balance right......now I am looking for engine #2 for yak #2 to replace the evo...sold it. After flying with the 58 I am convinced that a DA 50 will not be enough power for me, so my main contenders for a replacement engine are the 3W 55 and ZDZ 60.

My Yak is 17# with brison 3.2. Great power so long as it is below 85 deg and low humidity. It will be getting one of these this winter.

Then I think I will be happy.

Guy at the local field has a standard 3w 55 rear induction on his Russian Thunder Yak from AM and it really has been an awesome combo. He flys it pretty much each time he comes out and it runs like a sewing machine. Super smooth running and not a blurble in the air. It powered the plane great when new but this last month it has really started to break in and now rips the snot out of the 22x10 prop he is running. He could go up to a 23x8 or 10 and power it with ease. The CG comes in a lot closer with the 3w 55 because its a little more weight than the DA.

I think you can't screw this up with either a DA 50 or 3W 55...
