Default Foamy Painting Thread

I will be doing a foamy painting thread. I am painting a Sobre for Wayne Geffon. He suggested that I do a paint thread on here. I will show you how easy it really is to paint a foamy. I will be doing the following theme(Wayne's Extra 260) below with out any masking tape. Only scrap pieces of depron for my mask lines and depron stencils for the wording will be used. The 'Sobre' will be a little different then pictured below. Also will try to get some video also of the airbrushing. The paint being used is Tamiya Acrylic paint. It comes in 1/3oz bottles. I will be using a Paasche double action internal mix airbrush. Any type of airbrush should work for this kind of job.

looks cool, I really dig a cool simple scheme....I'd hack it but everyone from the net to Tucson would know who I stole it from.

Here are a couple I did for myself last year. Not one piece of masking tape was used. Here is the secret. Use scrap pieces of Depron for masks. The checkers where done with a depron mask. I drew the pattern on a scrap piece of depron. Then I cut the checkers out. Make sure to number them so you can keep them in order. I made the checkers big enough to place an old paint jar on each one. You place the checker pattern down on the wing. Place a old paint jar on every other one. Remove the checkers with out the jars on them. Then you paint the checkers. Once I spray the paint, I hit it real quick with a heat gun. Don't get it too hot. Then remove the jars and the depron checkers. This is just one example. The canopy and wings where also masked with depron and some weight on them. I will be using this method for Wayne's Sobre.

I will be starting on it tonight.

Matchless also did an article in this months Quiet Flyer magazine on painting foamies. As you will see there are many ways to paint a foamy.

Awesome! I just got an airbrush for my BDAY and was messing with it just to see how it worked. I painted a Diablo with testors spray paint but will be using my airbrush from now on!

Here is one I did for Wayne a couple years ago when I first started painting foamies. Again no masking tape was used. Wayne held down the cardboard mask while I sprayed. Needless to say Wayne had some nice colorfull hands when we where done. Enough until I start.

Ok let's begin. Here are a few pictures to start. The first one is the airbrush I will be using. It's a Paasche double action internal mix. I think they are about $60.00. The paint will be Tamiya Acrylic paint. Most hobby shops carry them. The stencils are made from depron foam for the 'JR' and 'Sobre'. The last picture is the weight of the foam before I start painting. Hopefully I will be back soon with more picts. I will try to put a vidoe together at the end.

I think I saw that Sobre at the Memphis Indoor in 2005 or so. Right?

Neat technique Craig.

Yea Wayne flew the Sobre @ Memphis in '05 and designer John Leyland flew it at the '05 ETOC. This airplane flys great 3d and precision. It was probably one of the first foamies that would actually draw lines and not just hover.
