The carbon is on the leading and Trailing Edge of the wing(carbon that comes with a shockflyer), Wing struts(.060), three pieces(.040) in an X Pattern down each side from the back of the Wing to the rear, and the Landing Gear. I am using the same Landing Gear that comes with the shock flyers. I just got done painting one and weighed all the foam. 1.8oz. I am going to weigh everything this time. I have a feeling the weight might be the Landing Gear. It flies great the way it is, but would be nice to get some more weight off.

Hmmmm..... Dump the leading and trailing edge carbon. Replace it with a single X-brace in .040 carbon tube on the bottom of the wing. Landing gear wise, I run .050 tube to .047 wire. Lash it with kevlar thread and CA lightly.

I do this because the flat carbon is fairly heavy, and the glue joint to attach it weighs more than most people think.

Thanks!
On my last one I got rid of the leading edge carbon and doubled up the 3mm depron like on the Manta. I tried to get rid of the carbon on the trailing edge, but the wing flexed too much.

Well it's almost that time of the year already. So I thought I would get started early. I painted this one to look like my OMP profile Yak. I used my vinyl cutter to cut vinyl for the outlines to make depron stencils for the Yak star and lettering. The Pilot with name is in vinyl.

Well, I needed to get my fingers twiddlin again with depron and the airbrush, so I built up a small kit a friend had given me (Jerry Combs). Its a Ballerina from BSDMicroRC. I think the kits out of production now, but its a cute little bird. Looks a lot like a shrunken Vrolet or Eclipse.

Very simple paint job (which I still managed to mess up) but it turned out allright.

Paint is all createx except the rudder which has a class 'sharpiecote' checkerboard scheme on it....

Now I need to 'stuff' it with some gear.

Match,
I have pretty much changed over to Createx from the Tamiya. I like the flor. yellow. It does take longer to paint a model with the Createx then it does with the Tamiya though. The Tamiya paint dries faster. The Createx seems like it takes a couple of coats. Here is a finished pick of the Yak. Everything is painted except for the Pilot:name. I made stencils for the Yak54 star.

That is an awesome lookin Yak Craig. Finished up very nicely!

BTW, I found with the Tamiya that my 3mm structures were starting to curl or warp towards the painted side. Did you find the same thing?

I didn't notice that with the Tamiya, but I did with the Createx. I think it's because I use the heat gun more with the createx.

Here's my first attempt at painting a foamy. It's a Depron West Yak painted to look like my EF Yak. I used Tamiya and Createx.

These paint jobs are fabulous. I had a quick try on a scrap piece of depron, but I think I thinned the paint too much. Just one question, are you cleaning or preparing the surface of the depron before painting it ?.

Can't wait to give it a go. I think I will do the painting before I assembly it, it looks so simple with the depron masks.

Cheers,

Simon

I am about to try spraying a DW Foamies bird and was wondering if the paint will take over the top of the hinge tape or not?

Thanks!
