Default 40% Carden 260 Tapered Ailerons

OK guys, I am at the process of cutting out the Aileron. I have decided to cut the taper to come out with the wing tip at 4 1/2" and the root at 6 1/2". My question, has anyone else decided to go this route and how did you handle the bevels ? What I mean is, did you just use the supplied 3/8" stock wood and adjust the bevel angle accordingly, or did a thicker piece of stock have to be selected to allow for the angle of the bevel on the plans ? If I go with the stock wood and lessen the bevels, will it be enough for 3D flying?

Thanks

Joe,
I cut mine the way you are saying. Used the kit provided stock and can get 35 degrees no problem. With that much aileron I don't think you are going to need 40. Just my thought. Two 9152's per side but I did cut the hole and hard point for a third just in case. I checked with guys flying the Dalton with almost the exact same size aileron and 2 were fine. I have not flown it yet. Wish I could give you flight performance for sure. I'm hoping that this will work!!!

Just a comparison I measured my Comp ARF 260 and the ailerons are 7" X 4.5" so your dementions are good. On my old Colombo I used 1/2 balsa and beveled both the aileron and wing. I had way more throw than I could ever use.

Hi Joe,
I did mine using the tapered aileron with the stock wood . . . no issues at all as far as getting enough bevel. I've also used the same dimensions on my 300 and the 330 I just framed up for Vatechguy.

Joe,
As long as your hinges are enough and glued, you shouldn't have a problem. Stock edges are good. Normally I would use 11 Robarts but have added a 12th one near the wing tip of my 40% 260 about 2 inches from the 11th. one. Most of the resenants ends at the tip of the wings. I've seen a few 40% planes where the last hinge has snaped because of this. Just an idea......

DKnippen,

Thanks for the tip. That is one thing I have always done on my big plane. I have 2 Robart Hinges 1" apart bot inboard and outboard on all my control surfaces. I have never had any problems with my hinges.

Good advice for other though.

Thanks
