The 35% Edge I built (with guidance from Hobbies X-treme). This was my first build ever other than an arf

The 42% Extra I paid a local superb builder to build. I didn't have the time to get it done before the next IMAC season.

If you "gave" me the Yak, I'd build it slow.

Hey Mac,

I too am going to be getting a AeroTech 40% Yak. Well Actually I have the kit . I worked the summer mowing and maintaining my builders yard for him. I am hoping to keep this plane at about 40LBS . I will be watching your build thread.I plan on powering mine with a 3W150, Fromeco batts and HiTec servos.

Sweatpea, I saw the build thread on your extra. NICE.
After looking at some pictures I think to hit 39 lbs I'll have to trade out alot of the wood, especially the sheeting. I may replace the bulkheads with CF/Herix bulkheads, and split all the stringers and longerons........I am getting way ahead of myself here.

I need to go look at the kit and decide if I want to do it first.

If I go for it, I'll run a build thread on it but be aware I am going to go extreme in mods to save weight. I fly at 4200 feet here with relative density alttitude at 6000 feet in the summer so weight is always a concern.

The 40% Aeotech Yak is one of the best "presenting" airplanes I've seen fly in the S.E.. Most noteably, Mike Elder used it several competitions and really presented the maneuvers in a way that fit the plane/power combination. He pretty much flew a medium pace, medium size, constant-speed type of maneuver set (I think he had a DA 150). For his sequences, it was plenty of power. The "wings-level" locked look of the plane in flight is about the same as the 42% Velox II. .... just my opinion.

Thanks,
Jim W.

Well Mac,
I bought the kit over this summer and from what i have seen it is a pretty good kit it will be a great flyer. The laser cutting is well done, the wood seems good but a little heavy, kiters never send 4-6 pound balsa in these size kits though. The foam cores are a bit rough but with a bit of sanding will work just fine. A friend at my club has a 40% edge540 from aerotech and its a big pussycat they fly great. The kit looks as if its going to be a blocky build. It seems to be low tech building, not bleeding edge tecknology, thus the higher wieghts. If designed with the latest techniques this plane should be easily built in the 38# range.

I am looking forward to getting it started for this building season, got one project thats need finnished first though.

I will be using a 3W-157 on cans havent decided on what ones i want to use yet. Also will be using 5995tg's all around 2 per wing half, 3 rudder, 2 per elevator half, i am going to make a 3rd servo bay in each wing half just in case i feel it needs more crispness. They'll be there when i need them.

And just like everyone else has said John is really good with customer service, just from the little bit i had to deal with him.

Also for the money you cant beat this kit hands down for cost..! Just try to buy a Carden this size for the same price, good luck.

Well my 2 cents, Cheers

I just finished this kit - I did a building thread on RCU. Mine came in at 43.5lbs. DA-150 w/KS 1090 tuned pipes, 3 8611a per wing, 2 per stab, 3 in SWB self adjusting tray in rudder. Only one flight on it so far due to motor problems, but should be back in the air this week.

I'm not a professional builder, but I don't think it's possible to come in below 41 lbs with this plane. It's a big plane. John has done an excellent job swiss-cheesing the ply parts. The foam is light density (1lb I think?) and the balsa was average grade. There just isn't much material left to remove. I could probably trim 2 lbs from mine if I removed the tuned pipes, four servos & associated linkages/wiring, and took out the pilot/dashboards.

My plane had plenty of power with the DA-150/tuned pipe setup (Mejzlik 32x10 prop).

Kit was ok, some materials were not the best. John was very good with customer service though.
