Default Comp ARF 260 & DA-150

Hello!

Whats the vibe on how well the DA-150 will pull a Comp ARF Extra 260 in IMAC? I have been a DA fan but that Kroma 180 sure is appealing. I live at a higher altitude and want make sure the DA fits the bill!

There are a few 260's running around the IMAC scene here in Australia. Some are running DA 150's with cans and I have also seen one running the DA 150 with KS1090 full pipes.

Both setups give good power, but from watching the piped setup, thats what I would choose if I was putting a 150 in that airframe. The vertical is simply awesome on the piped 260 that I have seen, and that was on a very hot day. I think it was running a 28.5-12 Mejlik 3 blader. Hopefully some of their owners will give first hand comment for you...............
As for the Kroma, I cant comment on that motor, but on paper its hard to argue with 180cc's

In the end if your flying higher levels in IMAC (advanced and above) then go for tuned pipes or the bigger motor. More power can never hurt

I would go for the 180 at that altitude, or pipes on a 150.

Does the Kroma 180 have a good mid range transistion? I do not want an engine that seems to be its best in the upper rpm ranges. Is the 180 an acceptable design for IMAC. Most of the videos I have seen on the engine is either WFO or 3D.

Thanks,

Perry

Perry, mine is on mufflers and I run a 3W 28X12 3 blade prop and at 37# I had plenty of power in Vegas. I had a 2 blade 32X11 ready to bolt on if I needed it but did not feel the need. Another way of getting good power is being able to keep the engine cool. The first few flights I has on my 260 was without baffles. The 150 I had was well broken in, using the same fuel/oil mix and prop as the previous install. On the second flight the engine started to sag on the uplines. I had to richen the top end needle 1/8 turn. After I installed the baffle I was able to set the needle back and saw an increase in vert. Also keep in mind that if you try a lighter engine you will have a difficult time with CG.

Thanks Shawn! I have been reading where the CG can become an issue. The KROMA is heavier by 4-6oz. I thought that this would be a benefit on the 260.

Hi,

I'm running a DA150 with BMB canisters, 32x11 Airmodels prop and std needle settings. I'm currently flying advanced with this set-up and I'm more than happy. A few freinds of mine have the same model with DA150's on tuned pipes, the power from these is incredible.

From my experience the set up I have has more than enough power, and after watching Frazer Briggs go through the TAS knowns (pre fire) with his (DA150 std mufflers), I know I dont need more power, just better skills. Having an extra 1-2hp wont fix my flying, more brain power may help!!

So in the end I suppose it all depends what you want from your equipment and what you want to do. For me a Comp-Arf 260 and DA150 with/without tuned pipes is a great combination, and with DA you get the added comfort of industry leading product support.

Hello!

Does the DA-150 w/ Tuned Pipes have any issues with heat etc? What is a optimal install in the 260 in regards to Pipe Mfg, hardware, baffles, etc . . .

Thanks,

Perry

Hi,

There are several different set up's over here. All DA150's with, KS, BMB and Greives pipes. The installs are all pretty similar. Heat doesn't seem to be an issue, certainly you need to keep all the necesary equipment well clear of the pipes.

The ones with the KS pipes all have excellent power, with a slightly sharper kick at the top end. While the BMB, greives combinations all seem to have great power with a flater delivery. There have been some issues with the greives pipes breaking. The others have been trouble free so far.
You will need to baffle the cowl, if you want to keep the temp down. Templates are supplied with the manual.

Good point on the breakage, that's why I got a 2nd set of mounts for my Greves pipes, they are about a mile long Wish they would make them for a 100cc!! these are in a Trueworthy 41% Pitts
