Well, a buddy of mine has talk me into building a yak of our own design. I feell im in way over my head. How would some of you guys approach a project like this? We've talked about wood construction, and also fiberglass. We think it would be possible to make a styrofoam mold of the plane and lay fiberglass on it and presto, we have a fuse. Any suggestions? Again, I feel me and him are both over our heads with this but the more talk we do the more I want to do it. We are aiming for this to be an IMAC/3d plane. Maybe take the dimensions off of something like the 3w yak since we know thats an awesome performer, or is it violating 3w?

Hi Adam, you might want to get in touch with Dave Micheal . . . he has scratch built a few different planes and was planning an SP 55 earlier in the year. He can give some good iseas on his process.

Adam,
I had to chuckle when I read Ty's post because when I was reading yours I thought I could probably help you out with this and would be happy to do what I could. My e-mail is davidmichael1@comcast.net My phone is 301-725-1909 Drop me a note when you get a chance or, better yet, give me a call. My initial thoughts are this- I wouldn't recommend the foam mold/fiberglass route given that you were pretty clear that you were afraid you guys didn't have a lot of experience with this. Wood construction/foam wing works great. Are you talking Yak 54 or Yak 55? What size? Have you done much building in the past? Let's talk- Dave |
