I have taken on a project that saved the life of a severely crashed 42% FMG Cap 232. This is a German made kit: all composite fuse foam sheeted wings and stabs.
I started out by stripping all of the interior formers and glass. reglassed the interior and cleaned up all of the exterior damage. Built all new formers and engine box. Modified the wings by running them through a band saw and installing the wing root to the fuse as fillets. Glassed the rudder and repaired the wings and stabs. Airframe info: wing span......127" fuse length.....119" engine.... 3W 200 B2 weight..........48.5 lbs I have slowly worked on this for the last 6 months and am looking at test flying by Christmas. FMG (Flug Modelle Gross)
Karlheinz Ruf- owner of FMG is a great guy. His planes rock. Posted below is a pic I took of his Cap 580 during a fly-in here in Germany. I got to hang out with the FMG crew and it was an absolute blast. Lets see the pics of the rebuilt one Shadow.

yea man.. full ailerons, or a nice set of flaps with a flip of a switch!
Or CROW like a big ugly stick!! That would be neat... dive bomb landings!! Straight at the deck, hit the crow... and shoot to landing 4' off the ground!

Back in the day Split ailerons were a way of not getting the servos not to fight each other. Some people still do it but rare.

you are correct gentlemen about split ailerons. I saved this plane from being thrown into a dumpster after the crash. It sat in a storage space for several years. Back a few years the radio technology wasn't in existance so the ailerons would be split as to not bind servos. But with todays radio (JR9303) I might try and take advantage of it. Flaps for really short landings and crow for some crazy 3D manuevers.

Here are some more pics, the dash and canopy frame were hand made. Could not get a composite frame so I decided to make one out of wood. The dash is hand made from pictures off the internet and matted using picture frame matting. The pilot was carved out of foam by hand and then glassed and bondo to get a smooth finish.
Unfortunately, I did not take any before and after pictures while I was doing the repair work, I know I am such an idiot!!! |
