I have been building models since I was 8 years old, having gone through the days of single channel valve R/C, reed sets, ghalloping ghost (pulse proportional) and into the modern age of 2.4GHz radio. I currently fly 3D fixed wing planes and helicopters, all of which are electric powered. I also have a lot of experience of 1/2th and 8th scale model cars (electric and I/C) and have built several fast speed boats over the years.
As a young modeller I spent a lot of time mucking about in the garage with any model earo engine I could find, mixing my own fuels and getting sore fingers when these engines "hydraulicked." My father supported my hobby and I cannot count the number of times he patiently launched my control-line combat wings for me.
