If I get one, it'll be through my local hobby shop.. We need to keep the small shops alive, and not just buy online.

Verrrry interesting!
I'm planning on retiring my trusty old Futaba 8FG in the next year. I assumed that I'd be going with with a 16SZ for $699, Now, I'm going to be looking at this new offering. I hope Hobbico and HH are both at the AMAExpo East in February, so I can get to see how they both feel in my hands. Both are a lot of radio for the price point, though the Futaba has a total of 6 more channels.
Naturally, the cost of replacing a bunch of receivers is a factor.
I already have an APP on my android phone to monitor my Ryobi field generator.
Keeping my options open
Pete

If you are a Tower Club member, you get the 16SZ for only $625 using the discount code for club members. So you are really comparing 12 channels for $600 to 18 channels for $625. I know it is not that simple for some but it is data to consider if you have to choose between the two.

Honestly an apples oranges comparison. Futaba has not been on par with many of the avenues telemetry has been taking us. I loved my Futaba gear but other than a rock solid reliable link and nice feeling transmitters they are getting further and further behind. I think their only great contribution in the last several years has been a serial interface(sbus).

No, not really. My comment was about cost of ownership. You are talking about features, a completely differently discussion. I'm not challenging features of either radio, just pointing out the true cost of ownership. Tower gives you a discount at time of purchase, Horizon does not. A simple fact of my original post. Each vendor has chosen their own business model, thus reflecting the true cost of ownership.

Now if you want to compare features of each radio that would be great, no issue from me on that.

You could also view that as Tower marks it up and makes you use a coupon..

So in your first post you mention channel count as a comparison. Is that not a feature? Not looking to argue just point out what struck me when I first read your post.

I do very much agree with you about Towers marketing. Bottom line is I stretch hobby dollars much further with Tower than Horizon. In fact I usually order from Tower several times a month getting parts and what not. My last order from Horizon until this pre order was November of last year...

I consider channels to be a base function of all radios and is used to measure the capacity of the radio to control the number of flight functions. All radios have channels so I would not consider them to be a feature. Now speed of the channel, method of communications of that channel, these would be features of a specific radio or model of radio that you could uses to compare the differences between radios so in that sense, perhaps so.
