Aviation Concepts 1/3 Scale Cessna 185 Build

Just getting started on this fantastic airplane and wanted to share my progress. Here's what the designer, Gunny, has to say about it:

Conceived 4 years ago, but a year and a half in the making... This was a design consortium project among three of my friends spread out in the North East. They were looking for a robust, quality airplane with special details and features for the rigorous duties of towing up giant scale sailplanes. Thanks to Kevin Kremer, Jim Dolly & Len Buffinton

Though not 100% scale, it's built with a sport scale structure in mind. It has plug in wings with aluminum wing tube. Removable horizontal and vertical tail surfaces on carbon fiber tubes. Elevator servos in the stab. Rudder servo is in the tail cone which is also removable for easy access to the quick release linkage to the rudder. This model can be for scale Sunday flying, limited aerobatics or as a glider tow plane. This rugged Cessna is built tough and will deliver in all areas! That's why it's so popular as an Alaskan Bush Plane. Muddy runway... No problem!

Photos and more details are here

I'll be putting a DA 150 in mine for towing. I also ordered the droop tip, vortex generators, stall fences and the tow release package. I absolutley fell in love with flying the prototype and can't wait to have mine in the air.

First thing was to unpack and sort all the parts, which was pretty intimidating, theres A LOT of wood in those boxes! But every single sheet and stick is labeled, along with a map of all the parts in the back of the manual. Made it a breeze to figure out what everything was and get organized. Fuselage is up first, so gluing some formers together. Nothing fancy, but hey, I can say I started it.

Awesome! That’s one of my favorite full-scale planes. One of these days, I’d like to own one.

Excellent, a real build thread, not an assembly thread. Subscribed. I see the builders are coming in here.

A little bit more time at home, formers assembled, tow release package installed, tailwheel mount going together.  1/2 size plans of the shop wall for reference.

I've had the opportunity to fly Gunny's Orange Prototype. It's an incredible flying airplane. Very smooth and is very aerobatic as well.

I used it almost exclusivley on my Skylark build, it was my first time using it. I really liked it, dries relatively quickly and sand easily.

Here's the Skylark album

I see the website says "closed and moving". Hopefully reopening soon? I'd like to order one myself.

Having been flying my 1/4 scale 180 for a season I would 100 percent throw the two piece landing gear in the trash can and go one piece.. way to much load is out on the wooden structure with the split gear.. poor design.
