Long battery wires can kill ESC's over time: precautions, solutions & workarounds

All controller manufacturers and EE experts say the same, long battery wires will kill ESC's over time! Extend motor wires instead of battery wires. If you cannot but extend the battery wires you have to add extra ESC input capacitors.

ESC manufacturer and EE expert statements (in unison), workarounds, rules of thumb, capacitor types, 'watery' explanation, theory:

Re: Long battery wires will kill ESC's over time! Extend motor wires

A problem not mentioned is the DC switching current rating that the caps are rated for, this is a big issue not addressed by the article. If they are underrated and are switching more current than they are rated for they will go bad. This is part of the long wire issue. A quick check is if the caps are getting warm(thermal rise while running). The longer the wire length the more DC switching current the caps are subject to. IR losses at work. The ESC vendors cut corners for cost so we can buy cheaper and with it comes a price.

I have added several pictures of capacitor units, diy units too, and comments about the influence of the distance between parallel battery wires to my first post:

Ron,
What are your thoughts on installing a resistor on a seperate power lead to prevent that lovely "SNAP" and electrical arc when you plug in a pack to the esc on a big system, to prevent damage to the electronics?

Excellent battery wire length thread by someone who apparently is into controller and or power supply design: explanation, considerations, capacitor choice, capacitor sources, albeit with a slight e-bike slant:

If you don't want to diy the capacitor unit

Watery analogy in this water hammer video. I like the instantly-stopping-a-moving-freight-train-at-the-front analogy in this video. Also notice the location of the anti-surge device.
