I grew up idolizing the TOC pilots. I was a kid during the TOC era, but remember the excitement in receiving my RCModeler, MAN (I thing that was what it was called then), MA and reading, seeing all of the pictures of the event. Really neat to mentally go back in time in this thread and I'm sure even more sentimental for those of you that were actually there. Thanks for sharing!

lots of great pix and memories. who folded a wing in 94 because he drilled a hole in the wing tube too close to the fuse?

The flag scheme in 98 was awesome! I remember that one for sure.

Gene Rogers from TX. I think he was doing a roll/snap line combo maneuver when it happened.

I know Gene definitely folded a wing, but I don't remember exactly why. I seem to remember he was flying a Sukhoi at the time?

I LOVED Stricker's Ultimate Bipe back in the 'small' airplane days. I think RC City kitted it for awhile. SUPER thin wings, all braced with flying wires.. Flew awesome on the power available at that time.

His Extra 300 that Geoff Coombs developed was cool, but REALLY came alive when they put 3W-140 4-cylinder engines in them. May have even been a 160 by then. That's the combo Steve ultimately won the TOC with too. I still vividly remember Steve's 1st unknown on Sunday morning in 96. It was FREEZING ASS cold, a bit windy, and he ripped off one of the most perfect flights I'd ever seen.

That airplane with today's engines in it would be AMAZING!

The red, white and blue Extra with the "scale" antenna behind the canopy was one of my favorites but I really always thought Sean had the best color scheme for normal covering with the black bottom and red, yellow, black top. Don't get me wrong though, the color in the mold composites are still the sickest !!!!!!!!!!!

Seeing these pics makes me a little sad too. I miss my buddy, Kirk. Always a smile, even when things weren't going well.

the folded wing was a pirate models 260....I don't remember the pilot's name. i do remember meeting a gentlemen in the parking lot who was hawking a couple of Extras out of a trailer - a 30% and a 35%. His name was Dennis Gergits, and I think the company was Carden or something like that. I heard he did okay with his airplanes later on.

i also remember watching Curtis doing things with a heli that defied imagination.

Pirate 260 eh? Hmm.. I only know a couple people who flew Pirate airplanes.. Especially the 260. Maybe Jason remembers who that might be?

Yea, it was Gene. I think it was the Pirate 33% 260. Tube broke right where the bolt was drilled near the root (not stock, had bolts in the root rib) I want to say he had a big plane too, maybe self-built, but it didn't work out for some reason.
