I'm not sure how changing it to the way you have it in your pic might have stopped a leak. If you fill your tank, and point the nose of the plane down, it's not hard to see you won't have to tipp it too far before the back of the tank becomes higher than your vent - possibly starting a siphon action that could drain the tank.
In Bcolici's pic, you could do the same by tilting the plane over to one side, in a knife edge position. Much of the full tank would be above the vent line. Not that you would ever spend a lot of time like that, but you could avoid even that by just moving the loop outward towards the sides/upper corners of the tank. There, the tank should hold pretty well, no matter the attitude of the plane. Not a big deal. Just a minor change to allow the install to be really right - one step closer to perfection. |

Yeah, 8300-8500 should be in the ballpark. Having said that, my DLE sat on the bench for 2 yrs after a minor wreck requiring a new wing on my 20cc profile, and it didn't turn the same rpm as before either. I think it needs a good carb cleaning/carb kit...

hmm when i first started it new it was getting 8300, after this gallon of fuel it's drop to 7600, maybe the screen has some gunk in it. New servo's will be here Friday, Sunday it's suppose to be 50 ish so i should get a day of flying in.

Ok it was an awesome day to fly, 65 and sunny and just a slight breeze from the east. Fired it up and let it warm up and checked the tune and made a slight adjustment and slammed the stick forward. 20 foot later it jumped off the ground and straight up it went! Still no 3D plane but fly's like it should have in the first place. RPMs after 4 tanks today (so 1.5 gallons total) have increased to 7800 on the ground but in the air I know its well over 8000. It's just barely under peek and sounds great. Flying to tomorrow and I'll have a camera man to get some video.

The plane handles good but I still fell it is low on power, I can hold a hover at WOT only for 10 seconds or so before I have to flip the rudder or elevator and dive out. I haven't noticed any bad stall behaviors and I land it with only 20 feet needed to stop after touch down. I think once that engine is broke and and running at it's peek I'll be very happy with this plane and can fine tune my basic skills. My CG is back at the 125mm vs the recommended 115mm but it fly's fine there and not going to move it. I noticed after flying last night the covering on the sides and top behind the canopy were getting loose spots, I was throwing it around pretty hard. I'll iron them back down and check the rest of the air frame. The landing gear is loving the lighter load to. Thanks for all your help guys, wishing I had some of you to fly with, I have just myself mostly to fly with.

It does sound like you are down on power. No idea why. It could be break in, but I don't remember numbers that low. Mine turn 84-8500 easily even when it's warm out (17x6 APC). Have you tried a different tach? Wondering about low batteries or something giving you a bad reading.
If you're good on CG, I'm good on CG! Last, at best, pull out of a hover is going to suck until you get down under 9lbs or so (7.5lbs or so gets interesting!). I wouldn't worry about that too much. At 10lbs+, you're doing good holding a hover (which makes me wonder about your tach readings). -Al |

Hard to believe but my 20 powered Velox easily hovers at just above half throttle. While pull out isn't rocket like, it is brisk and with authority. It will pull out of hover into an unlimited climb ..... and this plane weighs 10.5 Lbs. Xoar 17-6 laminated prop so nothing fancy there.
The engine picked up considerable power after full break in even though compression felt very good from day one. Much more power increase than any other engine I have ever owned. A friend just maidened a 20 powered Red Wing profile and though I don't know the weight, it has very spirited performance. |

It's got to be something I'm doing then. I'm not an engine guy so maybe I'm still not good at tuning an engine. Dry weight was around 10.10 so with fuel I'd think it would be back to 11.5 lb or more. Still heavy I think. I may over the winter change over to another airframe. I did notice my servos are 2.1 oz and others are less than 1.8. My next plane will be well thought out.
Just getting ready to go fly again, so I'll have some video so you guys can see and hear what it's like. |

Yes with the smaller engines, a half pound can make a huge performance difference.
