Do you have a copy of the TOC rules? Curious.

He and I designed the '88 Ultimate. They were built by Myself, Steve and Paul Kirsch. Based on the '84 Stearman experience, we decided to do a built-up structure rather than a foam/balsa structure like the Godfrey (still a great airplane) Ulti. Ultimately (pun-intended) I'm not sure we saved anything in weight. The rules in '88 were max weight 22# and 4.2 cubes, with no deviations from scale greater than 10%. Of course in 1988 there was very little information around on the 10-300 Ultimate, and I believe only one full-scale airplane flying.

I was not involved in construction of the '90 Stricker Ultimate.

The Design was basicly the same setup and size as the '88 airplane but with a glass fuselage that had more scale cross sections. The wooden Ulti had flat sides, mostly to make it easier to build and keep it straight. Both of these airplanes had a very thin wing section (~6-7%). The flying wires were functional.

The '88 airplane had a tunnel mounted pipe that ran inside the fuselage and exited well past the T.E. of the bottom wing. The pipe worked great...for about a minute. With a fairly stock 22x10 prop the 4 cuin purpose built Sachs engine topped out at ~8,700 rpm. With the pipe it was like 9,500. If we had put one of Meryl Hyde' soft mounts on the airplane everything would have been fine. We had the engine mounted too softly, saving all the wooden structure from vibration but killing the pipe/header connection.

Don't think there was any problems with ULTIMATE scale details as Gordon Price the designer and Pilot of the full scale Ultimate was a Judge! Who would know better?

From Jon Britt, Grain Valley, MO (near Kansas City):
Mike McConville's commentary about the biplanes at the 1984 TOC is correct. In 1984, Dean Koger and I each flew a Skybolt designed by Dave Scully (Dayton, OH). Hanno Prettner's was disqualified.

From Gordon Price:
I think the last contest I was judging was when Hanno claimed he had a 'scale skybolt' ..........(you had to be a thinking contortionist to agree.)
I still admire Hanno for his skills. I have great memories of TOC and would love to go back be involved in some way and see all the friends we made there. Those are real good memories. Chip was a novice then....glad I could help him climb the ladder.

All we had was this and a wing span. A local pilot from the Baltimore area bought one of the first full-scale Ultimate 10-200 kits, this drawing was in the info package.

Actually, it's amazing how tame that freestyle was compared to what one sees these days.

Very cool thread!!! It would be great to see a reunion of the top pilots of the TOC days fly together again.

The Freestyle rules were very tame by todays 3D standards. I'm not 100% sure but I think Team Hyde was having some engine trouble hence not a lot of super low altitude or hovering going on. He finished 4th in '94.

I did see his original Ulti.. I think built by his father in his shop back in 2007'ish... I seem to recall it was burned
in the garage fire (Hopefully I am wrong on this!!)
