Spinner, Single Bolt Adapter and General Questions for a 30cc Plane Build

Hi all,

I'm building a Skyline rc Extra 300LP 30cc plane. This is my first gas plane, and I've got the components shown in the pictures.

I need help getting some components for it and will appreciate your help.

I got a DLE 35 RA engine. I still need a 3" spinner, and I'm considering the one bolt adapter if it's a goof thing to have.

I would like to get a spinner with the correct weight for it, carbon or aluminum, and at an average price.

I got a carbon spinner from Hobvyking but the propellers holes have to be made. I prefer getting a spinner ready to install and drilled for the engine.

Thanks for your time.

David

Edge style spinner from NortWestRC, might be the ticket if in stock.

Precut for the prop blades, and they offer free drilling of the backplate for your engine.

The aluminum spinners at Valley View are decent. They have a sale going on if you enter "relief" discount code at checkout. 10% off.

Thanks guys.

Is the one bolt adapter a good thing to have, or should I stay with the 4 bolts for a while due to my lack of experience with gas engines?

I like the single bolts. Much simpler in the long run with no prop or spinner back plate drilling. From a durability standpoint there's no issue.

Ok, I'm getting it the one bolt adapter.

Spinners: Aluminum spinner vs. carbon @ double the price of the aluminum one.

Any good reason for choosing carbon over the aluminum one?

If you go with a single bolt for your prop, you will require a spinner with an aluminum backplate that has the ridges pressed in to it. Those raised ridges grip the back of the prop, and also grip against the face of the prop drive hub on the engine.

With a smooth backplate (no ridges) your prop and spinner will not stay tight.

1st photo - Tru-Turn aluminum spinner with standard and lightened backplate options. Note the ridges around the prop bolt hole.

2nd photo - another lightened aluminum backplate with the ridges pressed in.

3rd photo - an aluminum backplate with no ridges. This is not what you want for a single bolt.

4th photo - a carbon fiber spinner with a carbon fiber backplate, and no ridges. This is not what you want for use with a single bolt.

Ironically, I bought the HobbyKing CF spinner that you have for my single-bolt Brison 2.4 engine, because it is CF, but the aluminum backplate has the ridges to drive the prop. Yes, I had to cut the spinner for the propeller slots. Most CF spinners don't have ridges on the backplate. They are made for 4 or 6 bolt drive.

If you don't need the lightness of the CF spinner, it will be a lot easier to find an aluminum spinner with the ridges to use with your single bolt. Tru-Turn, Dave Brown, and many others are made that way.

Or buy a drill guide for your engine and use the 4-bolt pattern. Always drill from the back face of the prop, by the way if you decide to do this.

The main benefit of CF spinners are they weigh less than aluminum. In a 3 inch, it might be 2 - 3 oz weight savings. And some people think they look cool.

If you plan on using an electric starter, the good quality aluminum ones are generally a bit more durable for that.

Rc Addiction,

Is it difficult to cut the propeller slots and end with a balanced spinner?

The one I got from HK is a 2.75" one but has a lightened backplate, and is ridged. I'll have to drill it too.

I do bought the drill guide. I might start using the engine with the stock bolts and later switch to the one bolt.

I may go with the value rc spinner. I would prefer black but shiny looks cool too. The valley rc spinner does come with the ridges.

I can use a plastic spinner as a template over the carbon one to mark the slots.

The one bolt adapter will increase the length of the engine a little, so you would have to take this in account when fitting the cowling if you decide to get one. I would get the aluminum spinner that is already drilled for the prop bolts and notched out for the prop. Just one less thing to worry about. Carbon fiber looks cool, but you will probably need the weight up front to balance the plane. (just guessing from my own experience).

And it's already long with the stock standoff.

I think, one thing at a time as I require more experience.

Btw, is it mandatory to use the wood washers that come in the kit, between the engine standoff and firewall?

Thanks.
