Gas tanks for dummies... what size for a 50cc?

Fellas,

Never had a 50cc engine before. What size of gas tank would give me about 15 minutes of 'managed' throttle flying and a couple go-arounds?

I've always used a 20 oz. tank but I know people that use a 16 oz. tank at higher elevations (I.E. 5000 ft.).

What plane are you putting together Dave?

Well, I sold my Dalton and I'm taking the year off from IMAC due to my move (to a year off... to my move!), so I'm putting together a Hangar 9 Cap 232 G with an Evolution 45 (yep, got the combo when they offered it). I just need a plane to keep the fingers working and practice those advanced class maneuvers I can't do... like multiple roll rollers and, uh, snapping to the right, lol.

Of course I'm going to trick it out with smoke and tweak the color scheme a bit. I only have three days from now to have it done, but I should be able to pull it off.

Cool. I'm getting one of the EF Extra 300's later this month. I want a trailer to haul my Dalton around in, but I don't have the $$$ for it now. Plus with a recession possibly on the horizon, I want something that's cheaper to run and replace. I'll finish the Dalton someday, but probably not in the next year. I'll hopefully have it framed up and covered within a year though.

20 oz. on my DA-50 @ 3800 ft. goes for good 13 minute flight and comes back with 1/3 tank.

I always used a 20 oz on my DA50, usually have about 3/8 of a tank left after 15 min of flying. Down sizing to a 16 oz on my next project to shed some weight.

This is for a 45, so technically it should eat less gas.

Unless you fly WOT all the time 16 oz should be plenty. I can fly 15 min. with my Taurus 52, and usually have almost 1/2 a tank left. IMAC sequences (basic) and just goofing around.

One more vote for the 16 oz. size tank. I down sized twice in my 50cc plane because I kept coming home with a 1/3 to 1/2 tank of gas after 15 to 18 minute flights and figured I was just hulling around dead weight so I settled on a 16 oz tank and now come back in with just enough for a couple go arounds after a nice 15 minute flight...

Cool! I went with the 16 oz and set my timer to 10 minutes. I'll adjust the time accordingly after the maiden. Unfortunately that will have to wait until after the move. Discovered a small hickup in my ARF that will need to be resolved before she flys. It was fun shoe-horning a smoke system in this thing. It's going to be a really fun plane to fly.

Just be aware that it'll burn more fuel until it loosens up some so make your initial flights short until you get an idea. I put a 500cc (about 17oz.) on a ZDZ-50 and almost changed out the tank before it got broke in as I was nervous about the flight times. After it got about a gallon through it, things calmed down some and by 5 gallons it was quite a bit better on the fuel consumption.
