who has a laser in thier shop?

Just curious how many giants have laser cutters as part of thier shop. If you got one, post where you got it from and the specs. Also if you have had any issues let's hear them too. I am plannig on getting one in the near future and would like some input.

Re: who has a laser in thier shop?

Well I guess I'm one of the really obsessed because I'm not a pro builder!

Late last year I purchased a Cole Tech CL-5030. It's a 40w laser (will upgrade to 60W when it finally wears out) and a cutting bed of 500x350mm. It's an eBay special but I could not be more thrilled with it! The limited cutting bed has been a bit of a restriction and I reccomend getting the biggest cutter you can afford.

I've made kits with it (www.aerovinyl.com), trophies, stick planes, poker sets, all kinds of things! With enough imagination anything is possible with these.

Here's a quick vid of it in action:

Thanks to eBay these are getting more and more affordable! But you do definately get what you pay for.

Cheers,
Chris B.

LOL That brings back mixed memories I had a little 50 watt chinese jobbie with a tiny 11 by 18 table ideal I thought for small work. Didn't last long though and the company went out of business some months after I bought mine. You need industrial grade tools if you intend mass production. Hobby stuff is just that ......ocassional usage only.

heheh here is what you want

What a bargain !!!!!

Holy cow..500 watts!! from the buddies that i know that have laser experience, they all say that lasers have come a long way in a short time. that being said..if you find a 150 watt laser for 2k there is something wrong with it. perhaps one of the best known chinese lasers is the rabbit brand. they have been around for years and have many US dealers, parts suppliers. the cutting area is vital I agree, a buddy of mine has a 60watt Epilog where he works and it is awsome for small stuff, but thicker hardwoods and the 12X24 cutting area really do limit your abilities.

umm yeah you could say I am obsessed.. My degree is in CAD/CAM, I scratch built my own CNC and many other tools. I love drawing it on cad and then hitting the cycle start to watc hit come to life. my intent is to have the laser to compliment my router, and hopefully start a small buisness but I want to start small as I don't have 40-50k to drop into a top of the like laser. my research tells me that if you want a nice toy (yes at the end of the day it's a toy) that has the capability to get you going in the right direction, this is an excelent start.

from what I have heard, the craftsman one is not adequate for anything we would want it to do. i have no experience with it, just what i have been told.

Full CNC "BEAM Dynamics" at 500W+ with variable frequency and power. If you need something done let us know. We can "easily" cut 48 x 48 and can do up to 48 x 120. We can cut up to 2 inches thick in wood depending on species and we cut all sorts of "ply parts" If you need something done...?
