Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

Making progress as and when I can, got most of the fiddly bits over and done with now, such as gluing all the horns in, and made a start on the motor mount assembly.

Added triangular balsa behind to add extra strength and will also glass the main box to the square support before finally using hysol and carbon fibre tow to secure it to the fuselage.

Also made a start on locating servos and servo trays, they will be CNC'd once I have finished drawing them up and decided on where they are going exactly.
Again once they are done they will be glued using Hysol.

Will be securing the canopy using canopy latches, one either side, again started this as well.

As I say, slow and steady progress, but getting there slowly

Will be using some SWB arms all round as well, determined I need 2" horns for the ailerons, which gives you an idea of the movement on the ailerons of this model, considering I usually only use 1.5" on my 50cc models

Going to integrate the two ways of mounting the battery, standard velcro and the AZ moveable tray. Making a tray up for the battery that will run along 2 carbon rods to alter CG etc easily, and it will be attached to the tray by Velcro straps, best of both worlds

Little more progress, have got all trays mocked up, rear one is rudder, then elevator, then tray for the receiver and the regulator, and then sliding battery tray.
Get them all draw up and cut and then can go about getting them all glued in

interesting thread.

I'm curious to read the in flight impressions, and see other assembly pictures.

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

I just picked up my Thunder today. All I say is WOW! The fit and finish is sweet. I've only done a brief inventory and I am blown away. It's a little bigger than I thought but that is a good thing.

Phillip at SkyLine Aviation has been really good to me in getting this thing ordered. Most of all he has put up with my "Chomping at the Bit" waiting for the plane. I fell in love with the Thunder at first site. Phillip said he would get it to me as soon as possible and he did. Thanks Buddy! www.skylineaviationonline.com

I will keep posting as I start on the build. I am used to Chinese Arf's so this will be a learning experience.

VooDoo you will be the first by all means. You have the Krill experience. I am waiting on the slider and motor yet. A manual wouldn't hurt but I have a picture. Just make it look like that huh.

I am following what Graham is doing on his build so it should be fine.

I did have to have a body cavity search to get the plane out of customs though.

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

Been mad busy as of late, so haven't had much chance to look at the thunder.

Getting my trays etc cut in the next week and I should have a little bit more time to get this done over the winter now, can't wait to fly it, been itching to get it built!

Hello Graham.

Are you using epoxy to glue the wood to the composit?
Good work man!

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

After having a look, I have decided to use the new Axi motor, the 5325/16 with the APC 22x10E prop.

Spoken to Ales about this as well (the designer of the Thunder) who has also moved on to this motor now, although I'm sure the 5320/18 would have done the job nicely, speaking to Ales, he's been using both motors and says that the 5325/16 largely due to the bigger prop is far better suited to this model.

Tom, cheers and I will be using Hysol aeropoxy to glue my trays in, it works brilliantly for bonding wood to composite.

Hopefully my build will continue soon as well, just in the process of getting the trays cut for my thunder.

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

I've finally got some time to get on with my build now as well

As I've said my next major thing is the trays to do, but spent a couple of hours today getting all the motor and firewall etc all lined up and ready to be glued on to the fuz.

Nothing major to note here, just a case of making sure eerything lines up etc, I have extended the motor very slightly about 10mm forward to be able to get the spinner and prop on and not catching the cowl. Plus with the very front of the motor being exposed, should help to get at least a little bit of extra cooling in to it.

Cowl now has the mounting holes etc drilled as well, just got to put some small ply blocks in the fuz for the cowl screws to bite in to.

Only other thing I'm considering is some small cooling holes in the base of the cowl to allow a little bit of airflow over the speed controller.

Got all the aileron linkages all now in place, 3mm ball links, 3mm stud with CF tube over that. Went with the SWB arms in the end all round The movement on the ailerons is insane, can't wait
