Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

Graham

Excuse me I have inverted your build and the Jan one's.... Sorry

You said that the motor mount is as rigid with the cowl than with the motor box.... I'm quite surprising with this cowl mount due to the inboard power. Yet it works!!!

Cheers Bri, yer finished Uni for Christmas so got lots of build time now

It certainly seems to be, Ales is running his with the motor in the cowl as is Jan and everything seems to be fine, hoping to get mine finished in the next week or so now, so hopefully new year should see plenty of pics and video

Well looking promising now, trays are in, and pretty much all gear in is place now.
Put the rudder former in today as well as the tail wheel, got all the closed loop to sort out tomorrow for the elevators and rudder.

Got to secure the battery tray as well, but then it shouldn't be far off at all

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

Been busy with the thunder, its almost ready to rock and roll now, my plan is to take it down to my local club boxing day and get it all set up etc, then hopefully come new year it should be ready to roll out for the maiden

Few more changes as well, I'm now using a Hitec 7985MG on the elevators as well as the rudder as the original servo I was using had a fault and I also felt that it was struggling with the elevator.

Not only this but I'm now also using the PowerBox DigiSwitch as the smartfly regulator decided to give up the ghost. Many thanks to Dave Wilshere at M&R for great service and super speedy delivery as well

Now back to the build.

Rudder is all attached, used robarts for this, all trays are now in and secure and tailplane is now on as well.

The battery tray is fixed, 2 carbon rods secured with hysol and carbon tow, and the tray on top, did a quick CG to get final places for all my gear and found that as you can see in the pictures the model balances perfectly with everything where it should be

Added some wooden blocks at the front of the fuz for the cowl screws as well.

So pretty much good to go, AUW is looking at around the 4.8/4.9kg with having the bigger motor, but happy that its come in under 5kgs.

Very impressive job. The carbon inside gives a high-tech touch.

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

Model is now ready to rock and roll, but unfortunately the weather isn't helping, looks likes its going to be a few weeks now before I get chance, my local club is flooded at the moment

Ales has made a video of his for anyone interested:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU98gpqmsHU

There's a few now flying with great results and also a few more currently being built, one of which is petrol, so will post pics up of that when I can, should be interesting

Has anyone flown the model with a dle 30... Better 3d performance gas or electric?

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

Very nice Jan, great the hear the thunder is going so well and on the smaller motor too.

I know of at least one being built with a petrol engine, I think its a DLE 30 not sure, when that thread progresses I will post some pics up, I'm awaiting the result of that one myself as its going to be interesting to see how it goes. The is also another being built with one of the hacker inrunners, so again the results are going to be interesting to see when they are both ready to fly.

As for my thunder, I am literally waiting on the weather, snow, rain and wind at the moment

I think a better engine for the job would be a sysa SAP 180, or a ZDZ40F3A, or even
a MVVs/Evolution 26cc or even better, a 3M Mintor 37cc.
The Mintor and the SAP weight in around same weight... of 41oz...

How does this plane do with precision flying....(yes I know this is designed for 3d not F3A)

Re: Krill Thunder 3D Build Thread!

Well guys, I know its been a long time coming, but finally the Thunder took to the skies today.

Managed to get a little bit of video, but nothing major as it was only the second flight, so now I can really get some stick time and then get plenty of pics and video of it doing what it does best!

So the maiden flight, well fairly straight forward to be honest, nothing dramatic at all! 1 click of elevator ensured the model was trimmed and that was that! The one thing that immediately strikes you flying the model, is how unbelievably precise it is, I would go as far as to say that its up there with the 2m F3A models.

Second flight (the video) is the first time I turned the rates up, well as predicted, the ailerons work .... well
Going to be very manoeuvrable when I get a little more settled with it and some more flight time on it. But low rates its as precise as you like, even high rates its still so precise.

Power which was always my main concern is enough, I'm impressed with the set up, there isn't bags of power, but it certainly doesn't struggle on power, more than enough to pull it happily from the hover, and perform perfectly, but then again its absolutely superb for only 6S, more than happy with the set up.

Made up with it and can't wait to get some more stick time on it, will get some proper video and flying pics soon, so watch this space.

Krill Thunder 3D 2nd Flight (5 min 7 sec)
