Re: Who here flys Ultralights?

Several I have looked at and flown in are most definately N numbered... Sadly, I could buy a faily nice 5000 hour TTA 150 which my wife and I could actually go on a 1-2 hour trip in up to the inlaws and back for the price of a nice C II. I am not sure if a 150 could ROG in 1400 of strip though.... There are 0 obstructions at one end... other than a 4 foot fence..

Didn't we already go over this?

If you are worried about getting a sport pilot license to fly a Challenger then why are you considering a 150?

That's not it. Sorry, I was misleading. It's not the license. It's the fact that I could buy a 150 for what a Challenger cost. The 150 will go up in value, the CII wont. The C-150 might not be the right size plane for my yard. The CII will be perfect for my yard. The C II is not able to take a 1.5 hour flight with a hand bag to the inlaws airport (2 miles from them). The C-150 could easily be a reliable 1.5 hour trip taker... see my delima?

IMO I don't think you will ever see a big increase in the value of a 150. They peeked in value about 10-15 years ago, and after 2001 dropped a little. The Challenger should hold its value, unless you buy new or almost new. You don't want to be the one taking the depreciation hit. Maybe something like a Taylorcraft, Avid, or a Kitfox might suit your mission with the short runway and 1.5 hour trips. A CT would do your mission, but it is 4-5 times the money of the airplanes you are talking about. Tom

That kitfox is a cool airplane. It's hard for me to look past those silly flapperons though. Would you trust a Rotax 582 to do 1.5 hour flights that far from home? I don't know anything about these style powerplants. I have joined a fairly large club here in TN to get to know this stuff from hands on people.

Sounds like the C150 is the way to go. C II type aircraft are cool, but sometimes can be difficult to justify for the cost. A C150/152 will probably be easier to sell later, and is a solid airplane. Also easy to insure. As far as performance, the book gives numbers of 750' and 500' for takeoff and landing. Even adding 50% to allow for various factors, your 1400' strip is doable.

I fly quicksilver , I re worked mine from the ground up and have done loops spins and split S's . Its fun to stall also . the plane is very fun to fly but at a cruze of 43 mph its not a X-C plane , although setting out for a three day trip with camp gear is a fun time , when you are 150 miles from home in a kite you meet a lot of neat people . for more quicksilver info I would check out www.trikite.com
