DA use to recommend 5 gals. on Lawnboy ashless, then synth oil,but that has change over the years.I usually start letting the prop rip after two gals. on redline 32:1,haven't burned one up yet.Cooling has a big part to do with it too,if your cylinder is hanging out the bottom of cowl I think you would be safe.Just don't do any long motionless hovers.

nice closetguy
I really like to vent those engines, so big opening and even bigger exit right at the cowl and another down the cann tunnel on the lower aspect of the fuse

I usually pattern fly a new engine until I have to lean it the first time. Once that happens I consider it safe to do 3D and engine critical maneuvers as long as I don't do extended hovering, harriers, spins, etc. Limit aerobatics that have low air flow over the engine to less than 30 seconds. I'd give the engine another 10-15 flights to consider it ready for regular use. You want to run heat cycles to break in the engine. Do some high heat moves followed by something that will cool the engine.

My DA50R is serial 4605 from 2005. I still have the original manual and it only says 2-4 gallons on lawnboy. I think the 5 gallon idea must have been for the 100/150 twins as that is a looooong time on a 50.

I’d be comfortable flogging it after 2 gallons. And for those first 2 you don’t have to fly like the sport guys,.. in fact that would be worse. You need to let the engine rev and vary the speed to seat the ring well. I would fly like dshriver suggested... pattern/IMAC style acro, big loops, rolls, Cubans, hammers etc are fine. An occasional short spin should be no problem as well.

Let it rev, vary throttle, but just keep up airspeed for good cooling.

Awesome tips!

Im also doing the hot and cold routine, 45-60 upline on power, then loose altittude while gaining air speed on low power for cooling, and then again.
Temps on ground right after flight and killing the engine 70 Celcius with laser pistol, seems to be cooling very well.
Its also just a tad rich on the carb.

Its an awesome rolloing machine

I bought one of the first DA50's when the came out.I remember counting the gals. of that Lawn Sludge. You could really tell the engine was getting looser at three-four gal.point.I then switch to Amsoil at 100:1 per DA's recommendations.I went through two tanks of that and it sounded like the engine was coming apart with so much engine noise.I put the rest of the two gals. in my truck.
Been with redline 32-1 ever sense, couldn't believed how much gunk was coming out of the exhaust after switching,it look like a glow engine plane.
