transmitter battery replacement

I need to replace my spektrum dx7 transmitter battery - it looks like the larger rating LiPo batteries are quite cheap compared to the original NiMH's.

Whats the catch?? Do they not last as long? whats the better proposition??

Thanks :-)

Re: transmitter battery replacement

I replaced the battery in my DX-7 with a LiPo, and I really like it. It's lighter than the stock battery and lasts about a month on one charge. The only thing to watch out for is that a fully charged LiPo is just over 12 volts. When I first installed my battery the fuse in my DX-7 blew. Now, I don't put a full charge on it, and I haven't had any trouble. I also used a "slow blow" fuse this time. The other consideration is that you MUST remove the battery and use a LiPo capable charger to charge. Bad things await the person who plugs the Spektrum charger into his LiPo powered Tx!

Re: transmitter battery replacement

It's wise to charge any LiPo battery in a flame-proof container rather than in a transmitter or plane. It's usually during the charging phase that the LiPo batts have problems. However, I do leave the LiPo batt in the transmitter between flying sessions. Charging with a good charger and cell balancer is key, as well as not running the battery below minimum voltage. Lipo packs shouldn't get warm or puffy. If they do, then there is a problem.

Yes. Go for the Lipo transmitter battery. You will never want to use a Nicad or Nimh batt again.
