Mike,

You're right, it was for trial fit-up.

Canisters vs mufflers

The DLE-111 mufflers weighed 6.62 oz for the set. The Canisters, SS headers, teflon couplers and clamps weighed 27.1 oz. So, there is a 20.5 oz weight penality. All of the extra weight is ahead of the wing tube. Even by installing the rudder servo in the tail, I had to add 3 oz of lead in the tail to get the CG balance on the tube centerline. This is for IMAC style of flying. Tony advises if the CG is set at the rear of the wing tube, this is ideal for 3D. My first test flight was with the 3D CG and 45% elevator rates, the plane was too pitch sensitive for IMAC. This rear tube CG ended up needing 6 oz tail weight. The final plane weight came in at 27 lb - 0 oz.

Conclusion - Use of the canisters required tail weight.

That weight, especially with the penalty of cannisters seems too good to be true. How accurate is your scale?

Balance CG check

I made up two wing fulcrum devices from 3/16” balsa sheet, triangle stock and ½” wood dowel. I inserted the wing tube in each wing panel and used a straight edge to project the centerline. Then I simply tape the fulcrum on the desired CG location. As shown in the pictures, I balance check the plane between two saw horses.

You are right, the weight of the airplane seems too good. I used a 30# digital postal scale. I'll recheck weight with another scale if I can locate one.

You can probably go to pipes and remove most of the tail weight.

Re: Pilot 107" Sbach/DLE-111/canisters build

Finally trimmed

I got another flights in today. With 3oz of tail weight, it still was a bit pitch sensative. Probalbly OK for 3D I removed another 1.5 oz from the tail and the plane flies great. Now I only have 1.5 oz of tail weight. Down lines are straight. Rolls are axial. There is a slight pitch to pan on left rudder. Less pitch to pan with right rudder. Winds were gusting to 15MPH and was cross wind. I'll add some mix when the flying conditions improve.

Final weight with an accurate digital scale

We weighed the plane with an accurate digital scale by weighing the fuse, wings separately and adding up the weights. Final weight with cannisters, pilot figure and 1.5 oz of tail weight was
28# - 2 oz. I am pleased with the outcome.

DLE-111

I've only got one gallon of fuel thru the engine. The factory needles needed adjustment. We richened the high end around a half turn. The low speed needle was set one turn out. The engine idles smooth and is stable at low idle. So far the transition is smooth. The JXF 27-103Db rips at 3/4 throttle. The canisters are much quieter than my DA-100 on stock mufflers. Pull out from a hover is good. Good transition. I'll try and get some tachometer readings after I get two gallons run in the engine. I am using Lawnboy ashless oil @32:1 mix for the first four gallons for break-in.

Re: Pilot 107" Sbach/DLE-111/canisters build

28/2 is a good weight, with a DA-100L and stock mufflers it should come in around 27-27.5 pounds.

Are all the specs given at the Pilot RC website correct = Wing area, wing span and length?

Re: Pilot 107" Sbach/DLE-111/canisters build

The Pilot 107" Sbach is awesome for IMAC and 3D

I have added 7% up elevator mix on left rudder and 3% up mix on right rudder. I need no down line mix with throttle. The rolls are very axial. My rolling circles are easier with this plane than my 42% Dalton Extra 300 MEL.

The JXF 27-103Db prop is not enough for the DLE-111 on canisters for IMAC flying. 27" is fine for 3D. I have now installed the Mejzlik 28-10 prop. At full throttle, I can still rip somewhat. With throttle management, my noise footprint is fine. Verticals are almost unlimited. On take-off, I lift off at half throttle. Then you can pull vertical and do a up-line snap roll and still accelerate.

Attached are some photos of the finished plane.
