Thanks for all the compliments guys.

Here's pictures of the tops and bottoms of the wings. Since then we've added angled invasion stripes to the bottoms like all my IMAC planes have...

Here's the wingtips. They were carved out of solid balsa, then routed out hollow before attaching them to the wings.

Re: The SHARK!!

I designed the airfoils for the aircraft. The goals were 1) minimized changes in the lift curve due to Re, 2) higher drag than typically used airfoils (i.e. NACA0012, NACA0014) at near-zero degree angles of attack, 3) lower drag than typically used airfoils at high angles of attack. For the vertical fins, I modified the airfoils such that the drag actually reduces as you deflect the rudder... reaches minimum drag at about 8 degrees angle of attack.

Re: The SHARK!!

I also did some 3D inviscid analysis using software called AVL (Athena Vortex Lattice) in order to verify the pivot location was acceptable throughout the range of movement, as well as plot forces in every direction as it deflects...

Wonderful subject, wonderful execution. Its great to see such a great project, and even better coming from a father and son team!

BTW, the rudder is riding on nonmetalic bearings, is this because of fear of interference by metallic bearings, or another reason?

The left plot is lift coefficient and the right is drag coefficient. The bottom axis for both is angle of attack (alpha). That particular plot is the airfoil I designed plotted at different thicknesses. You can see that the thickness really doesn't affect the lift, just the drag. The blue line is the one I actually used on the rudder. You can see that at 0 and 1 degree alpha the drag is higher than at 7 or 8 degrees. Also, compared to NACA airfoils, the drag at the far right of the plot (at roughly the critical angle of attack) is lower... some of the NACA0012-type airfoils have drag so high it goes off the chart there at ~13 degrees alpha.

Thanks Jeremy! 'father and son team' is right... There's no way I could've done any of this (much like a lot of opportunities I've been fortunate enough to have) without the amazing support and guidance of my dad. I'll re-post this picture in case it got lost in the other pics...

The nonmetallic bearings were chosen to prevent any possible radio interference. Not sure if metal bearings would actually cause any noise, but better safe than sorry. Also, we don't have to worry about these rusting down here in humid Florida.

Wow Baron, that is some great work. This is a true example of engineering and design work. You and your father have out-done yourselves with this one!!!
