Baron, that's an awesome job, and tribute, to a unique plane, and amazing person that Leo was! Hope I cross paths with you someday so I can see you and the plane in person. Great job!

Nice job on the Shark. I met Leo when I worked the Cleveland National Airshow during the late eighties/early nineties. Excellent person to know and we'll miss that 'computer roll '!

Re: The SHARK!!

Thanks everyone the kind words. Glad to hear people appreciate the hard work, ingenuity, and creativity that went into both the full scale and the model Shark.

If anyone's going to be in Oshkosh next week for EAA Airventure, stop by the museum and take a look at the Shark. Hopefully they still have it hooked up so you can press a button and watch the stab actuate.

Baron

P.S. My mom made that avatar for me and she's been following this thread waiting for someone to comment on it

Re: The SHARK!!

Just out of curiosity - how does the full scale prevent the horizontal and vertical stabs from hitting each other at full deflections ?

About the model - it seems that the area of the vertical stabs is pretty small (maybe it's just optical illusion, since it's on both sides of the fuse) and the maximum Cl is extremely limited (0.9 - 1.1 from your charts). Compared to a traditional (oversized) stab+rudder arrangment which can yield somewhere around 3.0 Cl, it would seem that you won't have much rudder authority.

Does the rudder ever unintentionally stall ? Watching it fly at the NATS, the snaps looked "funny" and I'm wondering if this is the culprit.

Re: The SHARK!!

On one day we discovered some loose bolts on the vertical fins which were allowing some blowback, resulting in some funny snaps. Got those tightened and snaps were back to normal, but there wasn't much flying left to do. Oh the joys of a brand new prototype at the NATS!

I'm glad you've got it worked out ! It would be a shame to spend so much time designing and building something that looks cool, but doesn't perform well...

I watched the full scale video couple times and still can't figure out how it prevents the surfaces from hitting each other - it's really bugging me !!

Re: The SHARK!!

Holy Crap! What happened to this being a "hobby"? I thought this would be a fun past time to get into (w/ AJ's help of course) but now I get the impression that it may benefit my R/C career to first become a rocket surgeon.

I'm a bit late and viewing this thread, but, in my humble opinion, this is Truly amazing work, and thanks for posting your progress and some of the details many of us just take for granted. I would challenge anyone to maintain these planes are "just toys" after seeing the masterpiece your and your dad (and many, many others with their own models on this site) have created.

Bravo Zulu.

Re: The SHARK!!

how did the thoery for the wing design hold up? or have you gone back to a standard aerofoil? this is a fantastic build I have been working on a design of my own just starting to build up some ideas and very interested in your wing section.
