Low rpm on new DLE30

Hello all,

New to the group. Been flying for 27 years not but just bought a DLE30 that doesn't seem overly happy yet. Trying to swing a Xoar 18x8 prop. I am barely getting barely 7000 rpm out of the engine with about 3 tanks of fuel through it. Been all over the place with the high and low needles. Can get a pretty decent idle in the 1900rpm range but nothing seems to let this thing pull any harder at max rpm.

I'd like to think I'm smart enough to figure this out, but it's a bit of a head scratcher for me at this point. I watched a video that Mountain R/C posted on youtube of them running a DLE30 with an 18x8 prop pulling about 8300 rpm on the 3rd tank..

This is a brand new engine just ordered a week ago for what it's worth.

Thanks in advance.

First, I see this is your first post. Welcome to the site!

At least you got it started. That's more than some gas newbies can say. Agree with your low rpm assessment. Something isn't right. Clueless what might be causing that, so I'll just toss some ideas out

I know the stock spark plugs can be erratic. If you're still using it you might want to switch to an NGK CM-6 for more predictable performance.

Is the engine hot? Are you running the engine on the bench, with cowl on or off?

Exhaust restriction of some kind?

Does the engine seem to be running smooth at wide open throttle, or something less than that?

Is the engine responding as you would expect it to as you adjust the high speed needle?

Thanks for the welcome and reply. The engine runs and I've flown the plane once. I'm running the CM-6 plug. The high and low speed needles seem to work fine as I can richen and lean the mixture. Transition seems good and it does not hunt or burble at speed. Everything seems pretty good actually, the engine just doesn't run as fast as I'd expect. I've got it off the plane right now to do the reed mod so I'll take a good look at everything. Maybe it's something simple that I missed. I'll report any findings, just thought I'd throw a post out in the event someone has a "I had the same thing happen to me and fixed it by doing...." kind of story.

regards.

Note, some DLE 30cc that are brand new are very tight. You may need to get more time on that engine. I would stay with 30-1 Pennzoil for Air cooled engines. Also if you run this new engine in a very warm climate, make sure the cooling for engine is very good. Did you try like a 18x6 for break in? T. Hobbies has a nice Beech wood prop that works well.

I've got an 18x6 I can put on it to try. I've read that the new motors are tight, but 1000+ rpm tight doesn't make sense to me. I'll keep running it.

+1 on running 32-1 oil ratio minimum. Mine was pretty tight when new. You might think about checking the timing. If it is too retarded, it might affect the top end. I run a Xoar 19X8 prop, and don't care what the rpm on the ground is, it flies the plane just fine.

Are the outlet tubes rounded and small? If they are that is your problem and you will need to cut the end off.

I have 2 of the DLE30's. They are both new (less than 3 gallons of fuel thru). With the Zoar 18x8, which is the recommended break-in prop, they turn in the 7000 rpm range, max. One has a J'tec Pitts muffler, the other a flex header and small canister, makes no difference, except noise level. Evidently, the 8500 rpm advertised is with a different prop. Both engines fly my planes well...Aeroworks Bravata and GP Giant Stik.
