35% Flat Stab/Fin vs Airfoiled

Hi All,

Just looking at some early model Aerowork and Other Models of the time Like the 36% Edges etc that run a Flat stab, Fin and rudder.

Got me thinking what what the main reason of going to the airfoil type and would many down site there be any major down sides to sticking to flat stab etc.

Reason i as is im doing to changes to a 34% Wh Plans Edge 540, and it would be lot easier for me to change to flat stab and fin/Rudder to get the correct size i want rather and airfoiled as im just not the skilled

This plans was outlined on the Bob Godfrey model so im sure it will be great, But the Airfoils im not sure if they were changed when Wh did his version of if there the ones Bob specced.

Thank you all,

Ok So i have been able to find out some Answers to my Question.

Benefits of the Airfoil design are:

-Plane will Track better.
-Does not need flying wires.
-Easier to remove stab and refit at the filed.
-Servos fit in side stab.

That being said it could stil be made removale with Not much fuss,
Such as the EMHW models etc.

All of my profiles are flat (fuselage to!) and they fly amazing.

Funny thing started to think back on the Flat stab idea and Turns out the early edge 540 were actually flat stab and fin with lying wires.

From a model perspective who has been able to compare the flat tail model to and airfoiled, ie did they notice a difference in the air, Prefer one over the other?

From Rc universe:

"The performance gain really comes from size and where the hinge line is on the new tail and not from the fact that it has an air foiled shape"

Also Appears there is greater authority around center apprantly.

Cheers

It really depends on what type of flying you want to do with the airplane. I’ve found that flat empennage are just fine for general aerobatics but using them on an all out 3D machine it gets really complicated trying to stall a wing and keep the tail locked in at the same time with a flat tail. I personally fly 40% Laser 200’s that are plans built with the traditional flat tail surfaces and while the airplane will fly high alpha maneuvers it’s really a lot of work to set one up to lock in and be stable .
I built one with airfoil empennage and the difference was night and day. But my particular airplane will snap roll much better than an air foiled counterpart because I think the tail actually stalls where airfoiled surfaces will bury the plane really deep into the snap. I fly my carden edge for 3D and my Laser when I want to fly more precise., I realize the airfoil surfaces are more difficult to build but in my opinion it’s worth the effort especially if your building a 3D plane. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that Info Scott,

Really interesting that 3D Performance seams to suffer a little, I am building it for this purpose, Just a light 3D machine. In terms of 3D it would not be nothing more really than flat spins , Hovers, Harriers etc that type of thing, 3D from the 1990's hahaha

So what your saying is that is was more stick work to make it stay i high alpha , ie fighter to keep it the right attitude?
