Composite Cans?

Does anyone know where you can buy composite cans? I want to run cans on my next plane and would like it as light as possible. I vaguely remember seeing pictures of composite cans in a Comp Arf Yak several months ago.

Re: Composite Cans?

Dalton used to make them, I got a set off the web, they are nice. The only ones I can think of now are tuned pipes from ES Composites, they aren't cheap, but supposed to be the heat, putting them on my 106 soon.

I wonder how long that the es pipes will last witht the heat of a gas motor. I have seen many of there 4 stroke pipes burn out at the inlet, and seeping throught he carbon in the expansion chamber. I was told by a composite guy that most resins can't take the high temp. Maybe they have changes resins.

I think he changed the design a tad for the gas pipe, ES explained it to me but I forgot about it by now. The guy running him on his DA 100 and comp arf yak has been running them for quite a while now with no problems. I have a set here I need to put in something before too long.

Re: Composite Cans?

I did make some carbon fiber cannisters a few years ago but do not make them anymore. When I started about the only thing around was the Pefa cannisters which weighed about 16 oz each. I made the same size out of a carbon fiber tube and had aluminum end caps machined ofr it. They weighed 12.5oz each. There are alot more choices on the market today. I like the MTW 110s and also the Manfred Greeves pipes which are about a half oz lighter then the MTW 110. For me I dont think that I will build another plane for myself without putting the Manfred pipes in it.

Re: Composite Cans?

I got a set of those "Manfred" pipes, they are way cool, and LIGHT for their size. Waiting on him to make a 100cc size, would buy em in a flash

I believe he already makes 100cc greves. I think that is what QQ is running on his DA 200 and 4 Greves' pipes.

I have been running the Greves' in my 260, there was a learning curve with mounting them and dealing with the expansion, but they run awesome.

Re: Composite Cans?

The biggest problem with Carbon cannisters is the heat with the resins, but as one said, today your not going to gain much with carbon cannisters as there some very good metal cannisters which are not much heavier then the composite counterpart.

Take a look at BMB, an extremely good muffler.

Re: Composite Cans?

Ed Skorepa's composite pipes have the heat thing licked- but he is not into the big cans etc..
weight on the bigger piggies is not that much of an issue anyway-
so far I find that on really big stuf hosspower is harder to get right than the weight.
strange -but on full scale Unlimited aerobats- exactly the same problem.
