Re: Are we still in AMERICA!!!! or what.....

Something else came to mind with you mentioning this...

The Pledge of Allegiance ! I remember the whole school as the start of the morning in home room at school, this was done EVERY morning ! Then they played the Star Spangled Banner !

Here is some history I found....

On September 8, 1892 a Boston-based youth magazine "The Youth's Companion" published a 22-word recitation for school children to use during planned activities the following month to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. Under the title "The Pledge to the Flag", the composition was the earliest version of what we now know as the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

Two men interested in both education and planned Columbus Day celebrations around our Nation's 44 states were Francis Bellamy and James Upham. To this day it is still unknown which of the two men actually authored the words that were to become the Pledge of Allegiance. It was published anonymously and not copyrighted. James Upham was an employee of the Boston publishing firm that produced "The Youth's Companion" in which it first appeared. Francis Bellamy was an educator who served as chairman of the National committee of educators and civic leaders who were planning the Columbus Day activities. What we do know for certain is that the words first appeared in the September 8, 1892 issue of "The Youth's Companion", and a month later more than 12 million school children recited the words for the first time in schools across the nation. Our Pledge of Allegiance was born, but like anything new, it took many years to "reach maturity", and underwent several changes along the way.
After the Columbus Day celebration the Pledge to the Flag became a popular daily routine in America's public schools, but gained little attention elsewhere for almost 25 years. Finally, on Flag Day - June 14, 1923, the Pledge received major attention from adults who had gathered for the first National Flag Conference in Washington, D.C. Here their Conference agenda took note of the wording in the Pledge. There was concern that, with the number of immigrants now living in the United States, there might be some confusion when the words "My Flag" were recited. To correct this the pledge was altered.

The Pledge of Allegiance continued to be recited daily by children in schools across America, and gained heightened popularity among adults during the patriotic fervor created by World War II. It still was an "unofficial" pledge until June 22, 1942 when the United States Congress included the Pledge to the Flag in the United States Flag Code (Title 36). This was the first Official sanction given to the words that had been recited each day by children for almost fifty years.

One year after receiving this official sanction, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that school children could not be forced to recite the Pledge as part of their daily routine. In 1945 the Pledge to the Flag received its official title as:
The Pledge of Allegiance
The last change in the Pledge of Allegiance occurred on June 14 (Flag Day), 1954 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower approved adding the words "under God". As he authorized this change he said:

"In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource in peace and war."

This was the last change made to the Pledge of Allegiance. The 23 words what had been initially penned for a Columbus Day celebration now comprised a Thirty-one profession of loyalty and devotion to not only a flag, but to a way of life....the American ideal. Those words now read:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands:
one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.

Thus it is that when you Pledge Allegiance to the United States Flag, You:
*Promise your loyalty to the Flag itself.
*Promise your loyalty to your own and the other 49 States.
*Promise your loyalty to the Government that unites us all,
Recognizing that we are ONE Nation under God,
That we can not or should not be divided or alone,
And understanding the right to Liberty and Justice belongs to ALL of us.

You really need to do some research on this point. This country was expressly NOT founded on Christianity, or any other religion. In fact, most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were deists and not Christians at all. They took great care to avoid the topic of religion. In fact, the word "God" appears nowhere in the Constitution and religion is only referenced where it sets up the separation of Church and state.

http://freethought.mbdojo.com/foundingfathers.html

http://covenantbride.wordpress.com/2...-christianity/

And George Washington himself said this
Quote:
“The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”
So go figure. Yet people believe this to be true and then use it to defend their ideas.

And as far as free speech goes, yes, we have it, but it has been well established that this does not mean you can say anything you please at any time and anywhere you so desire.

Yes, I am a liberal so you can choose to either attack me or use that fact to disregard what I just posted, but if you do a little honest research you will find the facts out for yourself.

Like most real Americans i feel this is truly disturbing. If we all as Americans don't stand up for what we believe in this country will go to hell in a hand bag.

Amusingly enough you fail to see the irony in your statement, because what you want to do is exactly that. All this "PC Crap" is designed to keep anyone from ramming their belief system down another persons throat. Especially any minority group.

You do realize that unless you are a descendant of a Native American you too fit the category of people who came from someplace else, and hence are free to "go back where they came from" if they are unhappy.

I'm sorry, but this statement demonstrates that in fact you have no idea at all what this country is all about. And that is the real tragedy. It seems it is always the patriots and flag wavers who are the first to try to deny others of the very rights and protections that this country stands for,

Well all I can say is that most of the people that I know that insist you can't say Merry Christmas are liberal democrats and basically atheists. That means they don't believe in anything. In my experience in talking with them that includes honor, justice, courage, and a lot of other things this country was founded on. I spent 22 years in the military giving people the right to be free, or so I thought, and if I have freedom of religion and freedom of speech then I say Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah to all and if you don't like it then too bad. BTW Judge, as long as you're telling people to get it right you should try the same. Courts have ruled that "yelling fire in a crowded theater" does not constitute freedom of speech and is not protected by the Constitution. No where have they said that Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah are not covered by it or that they violate it. That's just your liberal friends in the government trying to get a few more votes by drawing in the ethnic trade. You know, the ones they couldn't buy the votes of with welfare.

Maybe that's because the patriots paid for it with their blood. I'd say that gives them a special right unlike most of the crooks in congress and the senate preaching that crap.

Actually Judge I don't think anyone complains that others in this country chose to not celebrate Christmas.

The problem is that the minorities are actually negating the ability of the majority to celebrate their holiday. I mean its almost a crime to say Merry Christmas.

If I new someone was Jewish I would say Happy Hannukah and I'd expect them to say Merry Christmas back to me (if they knew I celebrated it). Its called respect for all religions. I don't judge them because they are a different religion.

And lets face it. Christmas is soooooooo not about Christians when you look at the tree and Santa Claus. Its about Holiday spirit, being nice to folks for once during the year and its mostly about the kids! Sure there is some Religion the Holiday is based on

But I'll say it here.........Merry Christmas all FG members

And by saying that I imply no religious effects. So if you are not religious or are not of the Christian faith then take it for what it is. A nice greeting of good tide to you and your family from my family.

Everything is wayyyyyyy to PC nowadays.
