Re: Must See Video: Full Scale Plane Collides with Giant Scale R/C Plane!
I used to demo in Galveston Flight Museums airshow years back, but quit doing so mainly because they did not take us seriously, they would not shut down the taxiway were we flew from or the active runway some 500yards in front of us and got nothing but worse as years went by. My advice is not to do it. I can just see a 40%er going thru the B17 parked just 100ft away. AMA would love that one!

Re: Must See Video: Full Scale Plane Collides with Giant Scale R/C Plane!
I'll say it again on this thread. The pilot was in violation of Part 91 regs for operating his aircraft:
Here is what part 91 says about minimum altitude: Sec. 91.119 - Minimum safe altitudes: General. Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes: (a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface. (b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft. (c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure. Sorry but IMO the guy in the Pitts was in violation of this. He clearly was not "taking off or landing" (ie full power smoke on straight and level on the deck), if he was shooting a missed approach he should have been at full power and climbing back to the pattern (he was straight and level) and was operating over "any open air assembly of persons" which could be clearly seen by the crowd of people on the ground (he may have not seen the RC plane but he surely didn't miss the crowd!! That's why he was showing off). So unless he has a waver to be flying that low for airshow or demonstration purposes, I believe he is in violation of part 91 and should NOT have been in that airspace at that time. He should have either been on short final, climbing to do a go around or at a min safe altitide. Plain and simple, he was showing off for the crowd in a wreckless manner and should have his certificate snatched for these violations. The fact that he happened to hit something is secondary. Now had he actually been on an approach for landing or taking off and this occurred......different issue.... The airpark not having a NOTAM for this flyin is just down and out stupid. Terry |

hello, I have to say is, I stopped doing Demonstrations by what happened in the video, because I broke a plane (one pits 50%) for not having respect for us!
and I know what it is! is shameful but so far Demonstrations where planes are true only well-paid |

wait Mr. Radio guy knew or atleast aware about the full scale biplane is diving into the run way, why not just inform the RC pilot to get off the strip and done deal. lets think about it could been worst. some one should help Mr. Rc guy build his model that's all i can say, i say the club should atleast fund 1/3, the full biplane 1/3 and the Rc pilot 1/3 that would been fair. 8 g man that's alot money.

I don't remember all the outcries when another well known modeler flew a sequence with a well know aerobatic full scale pilot...I guess the difference was nothing went wrong then...

I wonder if the guy in the Pitts called his insurance carrier and reported a bird strike for damages.

We do have a group who flies at Wings Over Houston every year but is handle properly IMO. Our representative sits in on the pilots briefing and we are the first to go fly. We get a secured flight line and all traffic is diverted to other runways. When we have finished,or been told to finish, the full scale show begins. Works out real good.

Whenever there is a potential loss of life things will get blown up way fast. Here it is very fortunate that no one was hurt. My initial thought is that there is no way to completely control everything. Nothing is for sure regardless of what the rules may be. We fly several giant scale aircraft in the same air space all the time, on purpose and with dedicated spotters and still there are some mid-air's. It looks like there were some mistakes made here but with the information we have it's hard to tell exactly how many and who made them. We should take every precaution possible. Full scale aircraft can appear any time for any reason especially at an active airport. After all safety measures are in place and enforced the unexpected can still happen. In my opinion, that's where a dedicated spotter comes in. Had there been a dedicated spotter that was actually looking for potential risks the RC pilot would have some warning.
Would that have made a difference? I don't know for sure but I would think so. I know the next time I'm spotting for someone I'm going to take it a bit more seriously. |

No not beating a dead horse. Again, R/C and full scale do not mix. I have seen first hand what can happen and it is not pretty. R/C and full scale are two entirely different view points of view.

Now this is speculation but I imagine there was an airboss in control of the full scale who actually has an airshow waiver for that specific event. There was most likely also a pilots meeting prior to the flight to discuss safety. |
