I too love the UHU. I have found you can use way less then you think and acheveive the same bond. It comes out of the tube lumpy, when you are minimizing but it is smearable.

OH yea baby!!

2.5 oz as it sits!!

A little fishing line, and a few 1/64" plywood supports for the fishing line and we are golden.

This sucker will be sub 5oz or right about there when I'm ready to fly!!

Besides almost slicing my freaking finger off (man I think I lost a 1/2 Gallon of blood)
once again this has been most enjoyable.

Nice work! Do you have a pic of the router and/or jig you use to mill out the depron?

Hey sleepy, do you have full size plans of this beast? I have a plotter and would rather hit print then tape all those pieces together. build looks great, don't forget a flight report/comparison between v1 & v2!!

Great job Sleepy, I am finishing my milled out ETOC Mark Leseberg design and am waiting on the motor. If you can sneek away this wednesday at 1 to 3 pm we will be at the Cleveland Sports dome.
Keep the pics coming... I might need some airbrush lessons from ya!!!

Re: First Scratch built Foamie - 5.9oz!! NICE!!

V2 was hand drawn over V1 which was hand drawn over the Brio plans posted above.

I have not found untitled plans fo rthe brio.

Things I changed. Took out the drastic angle of the leading edge (added wing area)
added tapered ailerons, and they are slightly larger, made the fuse MUCH taller .5" fatter , and around 1" longer
made the rudder not have a counter balance, and I added the 'click" SFG thingies.

Ver 1 was designed to handle 3 cell packs and a eflite 300 so it was a bit heaver , and designed to be that way.
It is a harrier machine and a rolling machine, but it lacked good tracking in KE, and I attribute that to the short hight of the fuse. Hence Ver 2.

The rig I used for milling is just the off-the-shelf dremel with the zip tool using the round debth jig thingie.
Its like a little miter set up and it works perfectly for this purpose.
I didn't have time to go get plexiglass as matchless had mentioned in his very informative thread, so i just used what I had. I think with his method you can get a much cleaner line. But the funny part is, once you have it set up, the milling is easy and takes like 5 minutes.

HAHA I went from hating foam a few weeks ago to actually enjoying it a lot.

Anyone know if the milling of the surface causes any issues aerodynamically? i.e. is the wing more efficient inverted than upright? Maybe a silly question perhaps, but it makes you think that the air flowing over those areas could be effected some how. ???????

i always thought foamies were kinda like the old Roadrunner cartoons....you know, where the roadrunner runs off the edge of the cliff...but only the coyote falls cause the roadrunner can't read the sign about the law of gravity.

....foamies don't know about the laws of aerodynamics!

......*&^$$# foamies...

Just the one side. There is only .75mm of foam there.
It would be WAY to hard to mill from both sides.

I'm going to slap some fishing wire on it today, and see if its nice and twist free in the tail.
But if it indeen comes in around 5oz... it should be plenty strong.

Great job Sleepy! I'm glad you tried what you saw on my thread. Always good to see it put to work!

When we talked in Toledo about light foamies, I knew you were hooked then.... Just took the right bait (Clayton's airplane : )

Fly hard bro!

I want to actually make your plexi glass jig you described , but I only had the dremel and no way to get the plexi in time. I'm sure that makes the lines a bit cleaner.'

Still it wasn't that hard.

Before your thread, I had images of CNC machines wiggling back and forth over foam,
now just some hands and dremels.

Thanks again.. I hated foam.. and now NOT SO MUCH!!

Re: First Scratch built Foamie - 5.9oz!! NICE!!

Nice work Sleepy!!

I do like the idea of milling foam and will probably try it sometime. That said, I'd like to make a comment, if I may. You could probably save 1oz just by going with smaller batts and servos. I understand, you probably had the s75's on hand but, seriously, get yourself some 4 or 5 gram servos, a little 2cell pack and suddenly you're down to 4.5ozs. Find a lighter motor and you're down to 4oz's. Following this trend, my first Tensor weighed 12oz's, my second one, which I still have, is just over 7ozs. It's fun trying to save weight here and there without losing rigidity. I'm quite proud of my Clik! which flies fantastically at 115grams.

Anyway, just some food for thought. Besides, I don't think I have the talent to mill the foam very well so I look to save weight elsewhere. Combining the techniques would probably be awesome!

Cheers,
Dave

ps: Sleepy, thanks for the advice and comments on the 260. I just got mine last week!
