new power system setup
hi all
this is first gas engine plane and i dont where to start its 30% 85 inch yak 54 motor is new dl -55 with Rcexl ignition system servo are 4 x5645 and 1 x 5745 and RX is jr 921 2.4 so what battery's do i need lipo or nimh which power system do i need one with kill switch what type of switches |

Re: new power system setup
i would not use those hitec 5645's they have one nylon gear in them. i have an aeroworks 30% and they STRONGLY suggested not to use those servo's on the flight surfaces, the gear will strip. use the 7985's.and i wouldn't use the 5745 to heavy use the 7955 more torque and lighter. i am using 2 1200 a123's and using a 1400 nimh on ignition. hope this helps.

Re: new power system setup
I used the 5645 on the ailerons and elevators for two years in a 35% Giles that weighted 25lbs with no problems. I would however use a better servo on the rudder, but what you have would work. For power if you want to keep it simple and inexpensive you could go with a good quality 2700mh nimh. I'm using two 2150's on my 35% extra. A 2700 should give plenty of juice for four or five good flights. You could save weight with lithiums, they cost a little more because you need a regulator, but the weight savings is pretty insignificant.

Re: new power system setup
weight adds up fast on a 50cc plane.
I'd do dual A123 1100's through a Fromeco wolverine switch or similar (a failsafe dual output switch where the power doesn't actually flow through the switch) with dual output leads, then tap power off the same batteries for ignition, either directly off the batteries or plugged into an open port on the receiver. Use a Smart-fly ignition cutoff for ignition kill without an external switch (the kill will be the switch). If you are stil worried about power (but you shouldn't be), plug in a Fromeco DC-up into an open port on the receiver. It will be like a 3rd power input. |

Re: new power system setup
Hi bodywerks,
I would be very leery of doing what you are doing with the ignition power. When the ignition is in good working order this may be fine but if you get a loose plug cap or loose a capacitor in the ignition module you could very well take out your receiver with noise from the ignition. I would hate to see you loose a plane over a single battery. |

Re: new power system setup
Hi Yak-54/71,
The battery type is really up to you, either NiMH or lithium batteries are fine, depends on what you are comfortable with and if you have a weight problem. You can get more flying time from lithium batteries for the same weight but the whole system will be a bit more expensive. If you want to use NiMH I would suggest the PowerExpander Sport Plus and use our failsafe switch. If you want to go with lithiums then I would suggest using the PowerSystem Sport Plus with the failsafe switch. These units have everything you need for that size plane in one unit. Let me know if you have more questions. |

Re: new power system setup
Thanks Robert. I was speaking of only Spektrum 2.4 receivers. I don't fly small stuff much anymore so I don't worry about the extra weight of the ignition battery, but there are several folks running ignition power off of their receiver packs when using Spektrum 2.4 and nobody has reported any problems. If you believe there is a potential problem with it, you would be the right guy to get that word out.

A giant misconception people have is that the 2.4GHz stuff is immune to noise. It is a radio receiver just like our older 72MHz stuff and noise can kill the reception. In fact, the amount of received power is lower than our older 72Mhz stuff so it does not take a whole lot of noise on the power supply to affect reception range. Running your ignition off your receiver battery is bad practice. If ANYTHING in the ignition goes bad causing a lot of noise on the power line it will feed back into the 2.4GHz receiver and severly reduce range if not knock it out completely. The people that have had no problems have had perfectly working ignition systems. If they get a loose plug cap or loose a capacitor in the ignition module they will most likely loose their plane but they will blame it on some thing else. I can't stress how much I recommend against this configuration. |

Re: new power system setup
that rudder servo is way to heavy for a 30% plane and those 5645's are slow for 3d flying, plus they have a nylon gear in them. in a 30% plane you really don't need that much power, 2200 mah is usually more than enough. you don't want to add so much weight that flys heavy.

Re: new power system setup
if you want redundency which is a really good idea and you want to use li-po's look into 2 1300 mah packs
