Checked the CG, and needed 460 grams of lead to get in the recommended range!

Laminated a bunch of flat lead sheet together with epoxy, and then epoxy and screwed inplace below engine box under ignition.

Have not had to add this much lead to a plane this size, since a had a 90 sized Thunder Tiger Rare Bear/Warbird.

I think this will push it over the 7kg mark and will require MAAA heavy model permit.

Couple of finishing touches.

Cut away covering for nylon thumb screws that keep the hatch in place. Exposes wood, so sealed with thin CA then touched up with the Red Auto paint I used previous to blend it in.

Also ran the fuel tank vent down the lower landing gear strut. Might change this later for something a bit neater looking (bit of 1/8 brass tube or similar)

Scott, would the DLE 60 twin fit under that cowl? Crazy power but might be nice with those fat cheeks!
I'd imagine the exhaust might be tough to do....

On my unit converter that show to be not quite 17lbs. It's crazy that that lite of an airplane needs a heavy model permit. My 50cc cap 232 is going to weigh around 1lbs. I don't know what are weight limit is here in the states though.

Yep in Aust, anything over 7kg needs a permit for MAAA insurance.

For comparison, my 78" EF Extra with DLE-35RA came in at 5.4kg so no permit needed for most 30cc unless you start to go Scale type.

Measured it up, will fit, plugs caps would just stick out at the top a few mm

Stock mufflers would need a bit of chopping out of cowl underneath. Prop clearance not an issue with a 23/34"prop either.

In the future might make a float plane out of it....coversion to 60 twin could be an option at the same time....

Hi, I am wondering if anyone put the DLE 60 Twin in this plane as that is my plan right now? I am waiting for the delivery of the plane and was thinking the DLE 40 twin until I read this thread but the weight and dimensions of the 60 seem to work better. For some reason the dimensions from mount to drive hub is shorter for the 60 than the 40 which better suits this plane.

I know this thread has been sleeping for over a year now, but I'm curious if it worked out with the DLE60 twin. Anyone tried this setup in the Starlet? Or any other twins?

This plane simply has written 'twin' all over it! I flew mine with a Saito FA-300TL fourstroke twin, a beautiful sound and its golden valve heads just peeking out. Nice combo!

Hi

Never got around to trying it with the 60 twin, had plenty of go with the 35RA and I suppose I never got round to trying it due to other distractions :-) , actually sold the Starlet earlier this year ready to fly to a customer.

Very nice aircraft to fly.

Scott.

I agree, the 60 twin would be a little too much for this plane. It's often flown with a plain DLE30, not even the 35RA. The DLE 40 twin would be fine too by the way.

I bought my Starlet second hand, it originally had a DLE30 in the nose and required 1250 grams of lead to get the CG correct! So when I could purchase a second hand Saito FA-300TL and imagined the sound of it, I couldn't resist and bought it for the Starlet. The weight of 1750 grams plus the extra weight for glow control and batteries brought the CG in the required location. Unfortunately due to engine failure (a crankshaft bearing has fragmented in flight) I crashed the Starlet. It's fully repaired now and the Saito was completely overhauled, I'm close to a new maiden. I hope things work out and I have many pleasant flying hours ahead.
