HobbyKing's 50cc SBach 342 Review and Build
In 09 I purchased an Extreme Flight Yak-54 with the 74 inch wing. Soon after purchasing it they dropped production even when they said they won't. Anyway I had many flights and learned a lot about ARFs.
On May 20th I lost my Yak.... suicide by Maple tree. The fuselage is still wedged 60 feet up. After purchasing this plane I started a search for my next plane only to find myself in indecision. Well after the crash I finely made what most of you probably would think is nuts by buying a HobbyKing plane. I told my wife whatever plane I do get I will be probably be dissatisfied.. I risked $400.00 with shipping to get this SBach 342 50cc. On my research someone said it was like the Slipstream brand. Yes and no. Turtledeck is builtup whereas the Slipstream has foam/balsa sheeted. With the Yak the wing and tail tubes were carbon fiber and after a while became sloppy. I had to add vinyl sign tape to take up the slop. Another problem was the fiberglass wing tubes within the fuselage began to fall apart. The stringers on the bottom of the fuse were made of such lite balsa that they broke while lifting the fuse while building. The covering was wrinkled (which is normal) but when I tried to tighten the covering on the fuse, it wrinkled so bad I had to replace the covering. Now back to the cheap $322.35 HK SBach 342. The covering is perfect! Not one wrinkle or flaw. Hardware is complete with turnbuckle rods, fiberglass servo arms, anodized tailwheel mount, tires are real rubber and quite stiff. I had to replace the tires EF supplied because they wouldn't stay round. |

If you are not satisfied with the quality of an EF Yak then I am afraid you are in for a disappointment with Hobby King. Make sure and use all the Hobby King parts and let us know how it goes. Heck thrown in a Hobby King engine, RX and servos for some real savings.
Please keep us updated with pictures. |

I wanted the Greatplanes Yak-54 but a friend bought one and after close inspection also my bubble was popped.. At the time I wanted to put a converted chainsaw in it but found out it was way too heavy. When I found the EF Yak it was being sold with free shipping. My wife wanted me to buy what I wanted unfortunately I opted for the 74" had I known they were dropping that model I would have gone with the 50 one instead. I had nothing but grief with doing chin-duffs, bending landing gear etc. The problem was with the landing gear placement..... 3" behind the leading edge. All other planes from EF and so on had the lading gear at the leading edge. I changed it's position and no more chin-duffs.
So far I'm happy with the SBach. I could care less either way cause whatever is problemed I will fix or make better. I just want to get flying asap. |
