Build Log
Extreme Flight Speed Freak E- Outlaw

I just received the new Outlaw yesterday and could not find a build thread...

After the first night of building I realized there is not much building to this kit...more like basic assembly...But anyway here are some pics of what I did.

Hope this helps some with the questions that may come up.

For some reason I usually just do what needs to be done and reference the manual when an orientation of servo or something not intuitive. So my order may be different than the manual.

http://extremeflightrc.com/assets/im...LAW_manual.pdf

First step in manual was to glue bottom fin. After seeing the venting and the need to cut the venting holes...I went ahead and did that first.

And because I had the soldering iron out (570 deg and fairly fast circuit around the hole) I went ahead and did he holes in the door and fuse.

Next I notice a small spot of covering that was a bit wrinkled. The temperature swing this thing saw from Atlanta to 75 deg south Texas may have played a role. But quickly used a heat gun and tightened it up.

Next I started to cut the opening for SV-1250. This servo is a bit bigger than the Hitec suggested servo and cut out. No big deal...just about 1/16" from servo wire side of cutout.

Then I got back on track and epoxied the bottom fin in place. I noticed the fin does not sit totally flush at the mid point, so I put a bit extra epoxy on the edge. I aslo removed the covering to get more balsa to balsa contact..

Night 2.

Only had a little over an hour tonight.
I removed the control surfaces because I kept pulling them out by accident and almost pushed one of the hinges into the fuse. After removing the surfaces I noticed the covering was not sealed well at the stripes, so I broke out the iron and went over the hinge area to keep the loose ends nailed down.

Most of the time was spent on preparing the location where the rudder fin goes. The manual asks that we cut the covering under the fin on the hatch. I followed this direction and also cut the covering from under the rudder on the fuse.

I used a square to ensure the rudder was perpendicular and taped it in place for about 10 minutes.

I intended to use the same batch of epoxy but in reality I mixed a second batch for the hatch fin.

I also used the rudder to help locate and fixture the hatch fin.

Finally when the hatch fin was located well and the epoxy was about 10 minutes in, I flipped the hatch over and filled the tabs with epoxy on the bottom side.

Thanks Chris....

So the family was laying low and I decided to CA all three surfaces...

Typical deal 5 minutes of moving and centering then pushing tight then swinging them 45 degrees up and down...repeat and repeat until you get the voice in your head....UN CAP the CA and just do it!!!!

Three seconds later the surfaces are secure.

Thin CA both sides until all the hinge turns from white to wet looking.
I did focus on keeping the trailing edge even at root and tip using the fuse/wing as reference. On rudder same deal. This is where my fingers are in pics.

So got the Mezon 120 RPM ESC...Man this thing is BIG. I got it where it should go in the airframe but it is tough.

Last night was soldering and setting up ESC.

Settings
Frequency 8kHz
Timing 25 degrees
BEC 7.7V because it can.

So slow rolling....

Got the ESC in and 4000 6s 45C Glacier fits, but a bit tight under the cross bar.

Then I have work of CAUTION: Do not over tighten the screws to hold the shaft assembly to the motor. I think I over tightened. On first spool up (without prop) I kept getting hit with the heads of the screws!!! Three of them broke. Two close to the head and I had no problem getting them out. The third was below the surface and not sure what to do about it. I found some like screws but they are not aluminum.

I put three new screws and left the partial in place. spooled it up. I did not see or feel any vibrations. But this is not ideal...I will work on the partial screw removal later.

Did you seal the hinge gaps with covering or blenderm as the manual suggest?

Complete and maiden tomorrow!!!

The hardware was a bit confusing until you think through it. There are 2 different length screws for the Elevon surfaces. Long for the two on the thick side and the shorter for the thin part of the triangle. See pic.

I had to clear out a bit of the rudder servo pass through. The SAVOX servo must sit a bit different than other servos.

One thing to watch out for is the Rx location. Make sure you can clear the hook on the compartment cover.

Also the larger 4000mah LiPo needs to be pushed forward to clear the rudder servo.

I am diging all the telemetry I get from the Mezon. Amps, Volts, Capacity, RPM, BEC Amps, BEC Volts, and ESC temp. Good stuff

With prop off I was getting 26k RPM, with the 7x9.5 at full throttle I was getting 19k RPM on bench. I will post some RPM values after tomorrow.

Also I got the MSPEED 450 but can not find a good place for the Pitot tube. The wash from the prop covers most of the plane. The only place that may work it a wing tip. I will worry about that later.
