Oh... so you had to bring the "age" thing in here, huh?

Yes, it was very cool to see all the technology advancing in GS aerobatics and the Birth of Desert Aircraft as we know it today! Engines, radios and airframes were advancing faster than ever. Wayne Ulery devoted most of his free time to designing and building "custom" air frames for many of the TOC competitors. Many people don't realize how much $$$ and labor he had in these airplanes!!

No doubt great memories! Sometimes I think I was nuts for putting so much time and effort into it, but you know what.... I wouldnt have missed it for the world and I'd do it all over again!

I was flying IAC in the late eighties at the unlimited level talking about how "those guys" in the big RC meets are actually winning MONEY!!!!!! We had to eat the trophies if we wanted any return. Sad but true......

Good thread though...love seeing these pics!

Yeah, yeah... I remember someone running around the TOC event with a motor in his hands that everybody was buzzing about (prototype DA-150). There were a few of us that saw the potential in what that engine would bring and immediately jumped on board and switched from 3W. One of the best decisions that I've ever made!!

The TOC prize money was "huge" for the time... An interesting story, but a little off topic..... My close buddy, Mr. Chapman was performing at the Dayton International Airshow some 15-20 years ago. At the time, airshow organizers thought doing a "competition" airshow would be a good spectator idea. CASPA as it was called then, pitted 2 airshow performers against each other for one flight. They would start at show center (tail to tail), and take off and do their show(s). There was a no fly zone between the two that they would be disqualified if entered. Matt ended up making the finals flight against Sean Tucker, and after it was over he ended up in second place. We were talking afterwards about the rewards of the competition, and he asked how much I had won at the TOC. I told him, then he proceeded to show me his 2nd place check. $200.00 Wow, kinda puts it in perspective, huh??

I had 2 in that color. The one pictured was the primary that year.
I still say it was the best airplane for snaps that I ever flew.
