Tech Aero IBEC failures?

Today I went out to fly and discovered my LED on my IBEC wasn’t lighting up. I did several checks and found that the unit has just up and died.

Electricity is getting to the PCB but not through and out.

If anyone has had this and in turn fixed it, I would love to hear how.

Not only I’ve never had one fail. I’ve never heard of one failing, but anything is possible, of course.

If it were me, I'd disconnect the unit from your RX. Then I'd connect it to a servo tester with an appropriate RX battery powering it. Then I'd use the servo tester adjust the input to the TA IBEC from -2000 to +2000 usec to see if it operates. The problem may be the TA IBEC, or possibly not.

Looks like I win a prize.. LOL…

The unit is dead.. one day it worked, next day it didn’t.. quick and simple as that.

I plugged it into a different plane with all known working components slaving it in to and cycled the switches. Nothing worked on this unit.

Considering how rare this is I would like to know more about where it was mounted as well as how. It certainly could have just failed but as Mr. Ghoffman said, its virtually unheard of. Until now I guess.

It was mounted on the fuselage side wall with Scotch brand Heavy duty dual lock.

I had this same unit in another plane for about 5 months before I moved it to the plane I had it in when it failed.

Forgot to mention, I was powering it via Spektrum AR10400T receiver. It’s powered with 2 7.4V 2S 2000mah LiPo.
It was connected to a DA35 ignition system.

Check the connection to the LED. I have heard of a short developing between the LED pins on a few units. Carefully trim away the shrink sleeve and inspect. I suspect you will find your problem there. Thats really the only failure I’ve ever heard of on these.

The LEDs can short (wires pinched) BUT the ignition is still hot.

It’s not an LED failure. I’m getting no power to the ignition either.

I would look very closely at the solder joints, where the wires go into the circuit board.

I wrote to Tech Aero hopefully they will get back to me. I don’t expect much but worth a shot.

BTW, solder joints are good.

I would not blame them if they can’t honor any kind of warranty. I have had this unit for 7-8 months and it’s been in two different planes. Also I took the heat shrink off to be able to get multimeter readings.

I would just like to know what went wrong so if it was an issue caused by me I can fix it. I can’t think of anything I might have done. I will say while tweaking this model I have had power applied for longer than normal flight times. 15-30 minutes.. making several adjustments.. Did this maybe 2-3 different times. Maybe having power applied to long weakens the components? I don’t know.

Still, it is so rare I think Ed Alt will make it good for you. I run mine with 8.7V input and it is several years old, so I am surprised it had a fault.
