AeroWorks 50cc checkmate

Well, several years ago I bought a 50cc engine and started saving for the AeroWorks checkmate. Then like we all know, the company is gone. So my 50cc engine say on the shelf waiting...

At our field we were talking and one of our lead members says he has ‘stuff’ to sell. I ask him if he has anything for a 50cc engine and he says the AeroWorks red and black biplane. Well a cheap transaction and 20 hours later I have a NIB checkmate.

Several years ago he had a contact in Denver and took his airplane trailer and some cash up to Denver and bought some AW planes. He asked his contact about the checkmate and after a trip across Denver to a storage facility he got the only checkmate in the lot.

Now the story goes that this is the last checkmate AeroWorks ever made. Whether or not it’s true, it’s not verifiable, but it’s a fun story.

Worst case scenario I’m out a couple hundred bucks. Either way I’m glad to share this story and plane with the community. It won’t be a fast build as I’m gone for work the entire month of June. Hopefully by our September 2019 fly-in it may be ready for the field.

Step one accomplished - reshrink covering.

Prepping the HStab for installation and ordering servos ,RX, and batteries tomorrow.

Prepping hstab
I’ve measured the wing to stab tip and then I place masking tape along the fuse joint. When I get ready to 30min epoxy the joint I’m close on alignment and I’m protecting the covering from squeeze at the same time.

Hit all the internal fuse joints with CA.

And yes, the clear surface black on the checkerboard is peeling.

hahaha sweet story.

I have a wild hare plane with serial number 01 on the box still in the box. I know there is no monetary value for it but I like knowing I have the first one from that last batch.

I purchased my Checkmate the last day Aeroworks was in business. Had I known that I would have ordered 2!

I can’t wait to see yours when it’s finished! I knew Goldwing had gone out of business but then we’ve lost a lot of ARF manufacturers the last few years. Aeroworks closed the day after I bought my Checkmate. I was disappointed but there’s nothing you can do but fly it and enjoy it.
I had been looking forward to Kendal Simpson getting the full scale Checkmate back together and flying but he hasn’t posted anything on his progress the last few years so I’m guessing he sold it or decided not to finish the repairs.

He must be stuck in an insurance issue I bet. I checked his website last week and hadn't seen any updates. It's sad , but my wife and I battled our insurance company almost one year when we had storm damage. Any way I may post some pictures of my build . It's been a little challenging as it is SO dry here in Reno. All the China ply has warped a little.....things are not fitting as they once did. It's still a lot of fun for this old guy.......lol

Kendal is simply busy with life, family and work. No real back story or insurance battle.

Looking good Preacherman! Are the flying wires the ones that came with the kit, or are they ones you made up?

DaPreacherman43, good to hear you were able to get an AW Checkmate... I absolutely love mine. It's getting close to September... how's the build going.

Airmeng \ DaPrecherman - I picked up a pre-owned Checkmate a few months ago from a local guy (NYC area). I LOVE the looks of the plane (I'm a bit of a bipe hound). Turns out this one had lots of damage in the tail section - I had to rebuild the rudder and one of the horizon stabilizers. Getting closet to finishing it - have a DA50 up front. But I can't find a build manual anywhere online, so I don't know where the CG is supposed to be. I read one thread where a guy put two lbs of weight under the cowl, but an Aeroworks guy said that should not be needed. I do NOT want to add weight. Can you share where the CG should be? And did you need to move batteries \ add weight up front to achieve that? Thanks.

I have been flying my Checkmate for almost 4 years.
The CG recommended by Aeroworks for the Checkmate is 1 1/2" back from the leading edge of the top wing measured at the wing tips. I ended up at 1 3/4" after trimming and flight tests.
Good Luck with yours.

My batteries are located just ahead of the radio tray and Iím using 2 Pulse 3600 lipos. Iím have a Saito 61TS for power which is slightly heavier than the recommended DA 50 but I did not need any added weight to achieve CG.
