Bad days @ Reno air races.
There has been some bad days at Reno.
A bi-plane crashed on Tuesday killing the pilot. A jet crashed on thursday killing the pilot. Friday ( Gary hubler ) was killed and two officals on the ground were injured. Gary was competing in the formula One class, He was flying a Cassutt III M single-seat plane named "Mariah". |

Re: Bad days @ Reno air races.
To lose three people in one week is very sad. It has been a very difficult year for aviation due to all the losses. My heart goes out to all the families and friends of those who have perished.
Here is some video from better days at the races. Talk about an E ticket ride. It must be an amazing rush to be flying that fast so close to the ground and to other planes.

I believe Gary lived in Caldwell , Idaho. It is always a bummer to hear of a crash.

Re: Bad days @ Reno air races.
These things are happening because these are things that happen when people push their limits. Sometimes, they meet or even excede those limits. And, when the circumstances are such as those found in air racing, aerobatics and airshow routines the result is usually tragic when those limits are exceded. It sucks, but it has always been a part of it. Aviation history is filled with these tradgedies. I'm not trying to say that this isn't a big deal. It's horrible. I also agree that this seems to be a particularly unlucky year. But. As long as people choose to do these things we have to understand that with all of the entertainment, and all of the skill, and all of those other wonderfull things, that these people are seriously putting their lives on the line every single time. They are aware of this and we should be too. These tradgedies are always a very real posibility. It's extremely sobering to say the least.

By the way.. the other pilot involved in the crash of Gary Hubler is one of our own.. Jason Somes. He's a long time SoCal R/C pilot that many people here know. He was able to walk away from his crash landing with relatively minor injuries.

Re: Bad days @ Reno air races.
This story like so many came and went very quickly. I have checked back with Jason Somes Air Racing site and its been some time without updates. I spent some time with Jason at local jet events and he was a ton of fun and would love to hear he is 100% and back to flying. Does anybody know anything? Last I heard the accident left him with a serious eye injury..
