Hey all you electric guru's out there, I'm brand new to electric planes and need to pick your brains for info on a Great Planes 30cc Avistar that I picked up the other day with a Great Planes Rimfire 1.60 motor. It has no esc, batteries, nothing but the motor and airframe. Any help with suggesting an esc, batteries, adapters, etc, etc. would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks again for any help.

As a first powertrain the above might be a bit too big/dangerous for an e-newbie Thomas (and for his wallet, and his ego ).

I think it is safer/better/simpler/easier/cheaper/safer to start with a low power plane, motor setup, learning curve and all. To get some e-routine and e-knowledge with a cheap setup and plane?
And get some general e-knowledge. E.g: motorcurrent is proportional to voltage² and Kv³, usually an eye opener, has burned a lot of batteries, controllers and motors.

E-motors can start all of a sudden, without warning, with full torque available right from zero rpm up to full rpm, merrily hacking away at fingers, limbs and wedding tackle, with unstoppable force.
Motor and/or controller can go up in smoke in an instant (fffffizzzle ... aaaaand gone ), without the warning you get when an IC motor starts to run lean. And once the smoke is out, you can't put it back in.

You should be looking at a 80amp high voltage ESC.
Battery options are likely 12S-4000mah (two 6S 4000mah) with a 16x8 or 10S 5000mah (two 5S 5000mah) with a 18x8 prop...my guesses. I like the 12S-4000 setup as it also translates to many of the newer 74-78" 3D style planes while the 10S-5000 more applicable to 2M pattern planes.

I would start and stay with 12S(2X6S). There are dramatically more battery options at 6S than 5S. I am in the process of moving to all 6S or 12S planes. Jet EDFs, 30cc and 60cc prop Electrics can all use the same batteries. Simplifies maintaining battery lifecycles, chargers, connectors, etc. I have 1 10S 2M F3A left. Everything else is 6S 5000-6000 packs.

And pleasepleaseplease, do your RC equipment, wallet, ego, battery, controller, motor, house/garage/car a big favour ... get a watt-meter. It will more than pay for itself, will save you at least one fried motor and one fried controller. Will also help you finding the best setup.

  A watt-meter will more than pay for itself, several times over, your battery, ESC and motor will love you for it. After calculating, always check current when you have a new/changed setup. Will also help you find optimal setup. And it's a great tool for debugging your power train.
