in the EAA's latest magazine there's an article about skywriting and the author points out that used filtered transmission oil works great. you could try new stuff and if it works ok ask your local mechanic to fill a gallon for you once in a while.
good luck,
bart

Ya you could prob get the oil at a god price now that it was just harvest time on the cali and oregon coast. might have to some back alleyb deal or maybe you could go to the doctor and get a script for it and go to one of the new local collectives they are popping up like weeds in our town.

Re: Make Your Own Smoke Oil?

Seth!I use MT smoke oil out here in the UK but when I was in France last year I was handed a mix of paraffin oil and white spirit!this worked just as well as the stuff I use! Also Ive used many smoke pumps and the one I now use is the powerbox one!it never gives me any trouble and never leaks!also a doddle to set-up!
BTW congrats on the XFC!nice smooth flying bud

Re: Make Your Own Smoke Oil?

I used to have a smoke system in my old 81" Pepsi Chipmunk that worked very well. I used the Skywriter pump from Sullivan on a 9V battery and mixed up 50-50 mix of baby oil and paraffin oil.
I used to get the baby oil from the local supermarket and food grade paraffin oil from the local chemist.

The paraffin seems to give the smoke the density that allows it to "hang in the air" where the baby oil made it lighter and run better. This combination didn't seem to make the normal mess on the outside of the plane and didn't attack the covering the way diesel based smoke fluid tends to

I'm getting confused on some terms here.
Baby oil or (mineral oil) is also considered paraffin in some countries, in others places paraffin oil is considered kerosene which is not mineral oil.

It's probably called different names in different countries. The baby oil I used was like the typical "Johnson Baby Oil" used for babys bottoms ... you get from the Supermarket.
The liquid Paraffin Oil used in the food industry to lubricate mood processing machinery. I bought it from the local chemist to get the cleanest possible type.
All up, a litre each used to set me back some $5 or so and gave excellent results. A dense white smoke that "hung around" better than most others I tried at the time and believe me, I tried a lot of them.
