40% alum. landing gear thickness

I would like to try bending my own gear after breaking the carbon set I have on my 37.5% yak.

Does anybody know the thickness I should use? Is there a certain type of aluminum that is best?

Not sure about the thickness for your particular airframe. Most common alloy used for LG is 6061-T6. Be prepared as steel can be easier to bend than this stuff as it is quite springy. You have to bend well past the desired shape as it will spring back a bit. You also have to bend over a correct radius as if bent too sharply, it will crack on the outside of the bend.

Suggest you contact TNT as they'll make you an aluminum gear out of the 6061 T6. Not sure what thickness but for a 28% Extra, I had him build one out of 3/16 and as Truckracer said; that stuff is tougher than you can imagine even in that thickness.

You need a good bending brake for that aluminum gear. You need to consider thickness, bend radius and bend angle. Then measure diagonally, each side, to make sure it is square.

Thanks for the input all.

I did consider TNT, but bending my own would save a bit of money.

My neighbor does have a heavy break.

So.. is 40% landing gear 1/4" or 5/16" Anyone?

I just got a new custom gear from TnT in the mail today. Easy transaction and I have ordered from them many times before. About 2 and a half weeks from order to delivered. Yes a bit expensive these days but well worth it for a decent, quality hand made product. You'll be surprised how expensive that flat plate material is when you source it!

Thickness will be determined by the width of the gear. Wider can support more weight. Someone will chime in with some suggestions.

1/4" thick 6061-T6 is what you want on a 37-40 lb 40% Yak. But by the time you've learned the bending curve, you might be wishing you'd called TNT.

Where's he going to source that small a piece of the material? The only reason I was able to get bits and pieces if I wanted them was that I worked part time for a large helicopter operation that made EMS conversion kits.
